 I'm afraid I'm down with a bug but hoping the anti-biotics do the trick! However, the route is  HERE , adapted from a similar ride by Ernest. If anyone is available to take it on, please feel free to take it on and post a blog.

Meet at 9.30am at the car park on Central Avenue in Gretna.    The route goes mainly north on minor roads to Lockerbie where we will stop for refreshments at Cafe 91.   We continue to Bankshill, Middlebie, Eaglesfield and then to Chapelknowe and back to Gretna.   Apart from the lumpy 6 miles between Lockerbie and Bankshill the route is gently undulating.   Total distance will be 45 miles.     Moderate rainfall is forecast for all day.   Personally I like a bit of rain.   Light rain can make an otherwise uninteresting ride quite pleasant.   If necessary the ride can be shortened.  I hope to see someone on my ride.   The route is  here     Phone or text 07709710301 if you are coming.

Rosie here on Phil’s blog. Ride starts opposite Penrith cemetery on Beacon Edge at 9:30. We are going over Strawberry Hill to Lazonby , KO ,Busk, Gamblesby to Melmerby for the coffee stop.  Hi all Decided to put on a last minute Friday gravel/mountain bike ride to Kielder Water.  2 options: 1. Meet 9.30am at Newcastleton (car park in the centre of town) and cycle up the road to Kielder Village and then around the lake clockwise (approx 56 miles) 2. Meet 10.45 at Kielder Castle (car park up the hill near the bike shop) and cycle around the lake clockwise. Cafe stops - Coffee at the Garage/or bike shop in Kielder Village (for those coming from Newcastleton) then there is the Kielder waterside cafe (approx half way round) and the Forest Bar pub and store at Leapish Should be nice weather in Kielder on Friday and the autumn colours should be good. Meet in Hesket Newmarket car park at bottom end of village green at 09:30 for a ride across the Northern Fells to Cockermouth (18 miles) for coffee in the Moon & Sixpence. Return via Whinlatter and a loop around the back of Derwent Water. 2nd refreshment stop at Threlkeld (42 miles). Total ride 54 miles with 3,500ft of climbing.  I will be cycling from home in Raughton Head to the start leaving at 08:45 so if you would like to add another 6 miles onto each end of the ride you are welcome to join me. The landscape between Carcassonne, Foix and Perpignan is a delightful place to ride a road bike. It is peppered with deep gorges, vineyards, thick forests and spectacular medieval castles. The narrow roads that link the pretty, sun-baked villages are quiet, generally well surfaced and far from flat, making for a satisfying exploration of this beautiful area. Phil and I have signed up to join Marmot Tours “Pyrenean Foothills” trip from 15 th  to 22 nd  May next year. The trip starts and finishes in Foix (free transfers from/to Toulouse airport) and offers 6 days of cycling with several choices of route on each day. With regret I am cancelling the published ride on Wednesday 3rd September,  around Kielder. It is forecast for heavy rain all day. Being off road & through forestry it wouldn't be pleasant & possibly dangerous. Hopefully we get some better conditions in the next month or so & I'll try & reinstate the ride. Sorry, I know how disappointed many of you will be 😁, but I think it is for the best. Cheers, John H

56 mile ride starting from Newcastleton at 09.30, in the Scottish borders, with an option of 26 mile starting from Kielder Castle at 11.00 (approx). There is free parking at Douglas Square, Newcastleton (w3w ///remembers.games.desiring). Parking at Kielder Castle is not free (w3w ///receiving.spaces.slice). There are no cafes on the first half of the route, though there is a small shop in Kielder Village (15 mile) for coffee, sandwiches, cake etc. It might be limited so BYO refreshments for a picnic. There are cafes at 28 miles or 35 miles on the 'lake'. Although the Lakeside Way Trail is mostly off road it is well compacted & a decent surface for multi use & being suitable for all types of bikes. Some members have done it on road bikes with 25mm tyres without issue. I would recommend sturdy tyres of at least 28mm. This is a fairly easy route, though there are a few small inclines & sharp bends, in beautiful, scenic surroundings. You will not want to miss out 😉😁. ...

I'm really sad to be sharing the news that Paul died unexpectedly yesterday. He had a long history with the club which goes back several years before me, as secretary, ride leader and champion of the 'moderate rides'. He and his beloved wife Sue were keen cyclists and members of more than one club and I think they sometimes rode a tandem. Paul was no stranger to illness having fought off his own cancer and losing Sue in 2022. Paul continued to embrace life and looked after his friendships. We would see him occasionally at club cafe stops and he celebrated his 80th birthday in style in March surrounded by friends reflecting his multiple interests including his membership of the Cockermouth Ukelele Band. Paul's daughter Rosie is well known to club members - she even joined us 'oldies' on the occasional club holiday and I have her permission to share this lovely photo from 2023 when Paul was pleased to be at her side for her wedding. 61 mile ride starting over the Scottish border in Gretna, 09.30, August 20th, at the car park off Central Avenue. Just past the shops & registry office (what3words ///flush.fiction.nothing). Taking some scenic, almost traffic free, back roads to Ecclefechan, Dalton, Clarancefield & Bankend to  The Crichton Central Cafe  Dumfries, for lunch (31 miles - there is nowhere in-between for refreshments so if that's too far please bring snacks). After lunch it's a fantastic run along the River Nith to the Solway via Glencaple, past Caerlaverock Castle & Ruthwell to Powfoot for ice cream/refreshments (48 mile) onto Annan, Eastriggs & Gretna. From the M6 enter Sedbergh, pass the garage on your right and look out for a right turn signed Dent. Turn right and follow the road round and park alongside the school playing field or the Cemetery. We ride down the Lune Valley to Barbon and Cowan Bridge for coffee. (12miles). After coffee it’s Leck, Burton in Lonsdale, Thornton and into Kingsdale. Kingsdale Head, Deepdale and Dent for lunch. Meet at The Sands, Brampton at 9.30am.   The Sands is on the eastern edge of Brampton and is the location of the Howard Memorial Shelter.    The route will be Banks, Birdoswald, Gilsland and a refreshment stop in Greenhead.   Then into a tunnel under the A69 after which we ride past Blenkinsop Castle.   Eventually we join the A689 road at Knaresdale before turning onto the Pennine Cycle Way after Slaggyford and continuing into Alston.  We may stop there for lunch.   In the afternoon we go over Hartside then Renwick, Castle Carrock and back to Brampton.    The distance will be 51 miles.   The route is lumpy with lots of arrows on the roads to Alston.  The forecast at the moment is for the weather to be sunny and dry.   Please let me know if coming 077097 10301. Sea, Sand & Sunshine... it's the Silloth on Solway 'flatty' ride 😁  60 miles, almost flat ride, around the beautiful Solway coast taking in Silloth, Anthorn, Bowness on Solway & Burgh by Sands.  I attended a ‘Teams Meeting’ of the ‘Appleby and Brough Place Action Group’ last week. It is a Local Government Initiative to which the Parish Councils  are contributing along with some input from other interested parties (including me as Your Campaigns  Officer). I wondered if   we could assist the Group by offering any bikes (in whatever state) to assist the Project (I am thinking ‘without payment’}. The objective of the Group is to get people cycling; this project is aimed at people who may have cycles in their sheds (or elsewhere) but have not got round to getting them roadworthy and then taking them out on or off road, or do not have a bike but want to cycle. ‘The Bike Inn’ in Appleby is providing the expertise in restoration of the bikes (which is being funded for this). Sessions are being offered on: Friday the 1 st August at Eden Valley Railway Station, Warcop on Tuesday the 5 th August at Brough Memorial Hall, and Another one at Appleby quite soon....

 Rosie and myself are leading 2 rides to the White Rabbit tearoom near Brampton. Leaving Beacon Edge cemetery lay-by at 9.30, with a pickup at Lazonby bridge carpark at around 10am.  It's going to be another hot day on Sunday but I'm planning to ride down to Melmerby (cafe stop 22 mile). My close friend came off his bike on a cattle grid at the bottom of Wrynose Pass recently and his injuries will prevent him from going on a planned trip this autumn.  We have been given a few days by the travel company to find someone else before they cancel the place so, if anyone is interested, the full trip details are on the "Marmot Tours" Website or just contact me.  The trip is six days of supported riding with a choice of routes.  Marmot offer transport to and from Marseille Airport but flights need to be booked separately.  I will be driving out for a longer stay in the area.  I know most of the group who are going (about 20 in total but we don't ride together) and they are very welcoming.  It would be great if any EV member would like to go bearing in mind that you would have to put up with sharing a hotel room with me.  If there is any response I will take the first person to commit to definitely wishing to go.   John Patrick ...

The reason for the unusual name of this ride is because we will be riding to Eskdalemuir.    This area statistically has the highest level of rainfall in the UK - higher even than Borrowdale I have read.  The latest forecast I have come across suggests it will be dry and sunny.   Eskdalemuir is my favourite place and whatever route one takes to get there is scenic.    We will meet at the Sycamore Cafe in Longtown at 9.30am on Wednesday.      The route will include Claygate to Langholm, Bentpath and the B709 to Eskdalemuir for lunch at the community hub.    A short distance beyond the hub is the Samye Ling Buddhist temple.   If you have not been before it is worth a visit.   After lunch we return to Longtown via Castle O’er and Chapelknowe.. 9.30 start from the Green at Langwathby. Gradual ride up to Skirwith, down to Appleby and up to Morland then the cafe stop at Melkinthorpe. Back via Cliburn, over the hill behind centreparcs and back via Ousby and Gamblesby. 1 think John's photos and Les's comments say it all - what a great event it was. Shame about the weather - we expected a few showers but not extended downpours and it always amazes me how stoic cyclists are. Special thanks to Claire for taking the responsibility for organising all the catering and most importantly to Bill O who brought the whole project together. I won't pick anyone else out by name but this event couldn't happen without the support of all the club - the soup and crumble makers, the registration officers,  and all those helping on the day whether washing up in the kitchen or serving up or just lending a hand when they could see it was needed. A big 'thank you' to the ride leaders - without you it couldn't have happened. Alison

A superb event - except for the weather!  Copious thanks to all the organisers, route planners, map makers printed and gpx, risk assessors, leaders, back up transport, helpers on the day and of course the catering team and food contributors. Every detail was impeccably organised and executed so all went like clockwork on the day. The staff at Mosedale meeting house 11's also did a super job with yummy cakes despite an influx of nearly all the groups at the same time. No specific nominees - but you all know the immense amount you individually contributed to make the day an unqualified success - except for the weather! Many thanks indeed from  Les (still somewhat overfull of crumble)

Mtb or Gravel bike ride from Threlkeld Car Park (GR 318258) at 9.30 Starts from a small car park past the village primary school. The route from here goes past the Blencathra  centre onto a BW that eventually goes to Skiddaw House.  We follow the BW and go downhill past Dash Force to the road. The route then goes along small lanes to Fellside. Here we rejoin the BW onto the Caldbeck Fells. We go past old mining areas to Calebreck to join the road.  Hi Wednesday's ride is starting at Keswick/Portinscale. Free Parking off the dead end track off the B5289 near the footbridge over to Portinscale. Best get there early for a space. Route goes through Portinscale up Ullock Moss to join the Newlands Pass Road. Up over Newlands to Buttermere. Early coffee stop and refuel at the Croft House Farm Cafe in Buttermere. Then onto Crummock Water, Loweswater,  Mockerkin,  Branthwaite,  Eaglesfield and Lorton. Stop at Lorton Village Shop for Coffee and a snack (sausage rolls/snacks/cake available) then up Whinlatter Pass back to Keswick. Approx 43 miles. A two bike ride of 35 miles leaving Dalston at 9.30. Route  HERE . About 18 miles to the Quaker Meeting House at Mosedale for refreshments (perhaps by 11.30). Here we may meet up with Dave's ride from Armathwaite (see post below). The ride out often follows very minor roads and is a bit of an exploration as we criss-cross the Caldew several times. Obviously river crossings create a bit of up-and-down! So a slowish pace. The route back is a bit more direct and crosses the river only once at the White Bridge in Dalston. A choice of two rides again starting and finishing in Dalston. Both rides are the afternoon loops, out to the Solway, of our Tri-Vets rides which are planned for the 2nd July. Now Kirkby Stephen to Tan Hill, Reeth, back  via Swaledale  47 miles, 4000 ft ascent.  Start from Kirkby Stephen up to Tan Hill then a great descent down  Arkengarthdale to Reeth. Cafe stop at the Dales cycle centre. Return via Grinton and back to Gunnerside , Keld and over the moors to Nateby & Kirby Stephen. 9.30 start at the town centre carpark Kirkby Stephen( see the GPX attached), ie the large free car park on the Soulby Road opposite the health centre, NOT the market square.   Some of you may know that Jonathan from the Appleby area has had to put his cycling on hold for a while due to torn knee tendons. We all wish him a full recovery as quickly as possible. He has two cycling items he won’t be able to use and is offering them to others (for a suitable donation 😉 ) The first relates to the Ride to the Sun which Jonathan had planned to do overnight Saturday 21 st June before his body told him he couldn’t. Jonathan has booked a ticket for the bus to take riders and their bikes back from Edinburgh to Carlisle after the event which is now for sale. Meet in car park at Hesket Newmarket for a 9:30 start following the Reviers Route to Cockermouth for coffee. Return via Whinlatter & a loop around Derwent Water. Several choices for a 2nd refreshment stop by mutual agreement of the group. Total distance about 52 miles - route HERE . It’s great now that the days are getting longer and we’ve had enough sunshine to start tempting us outdoors again – of course, many of you haven’t stopped going out through the winter anyway! This email is just a quick update primarily about three things.
