Ride to Melmerby (coffee stop) Sunday13th

It's going to be another hot day on Sunday but I'm planning to ride down to Melmerby (cafe stop 22 mile). I'll be leaving Dalston @09.30 & going via Southwaite, Armathwaite (almost), Lazonby, K.O. & Gamblesby. If anyone fancies coming along please WhatsApp or text me on 07855534727. It would be great to have some company. We can make up the route back as we go along. Route is totally flexible & open to discussion such as fitting in an ice cream stop🍦. Cheers  🍻 👍

Tri-Vets Feedback

I just wanted to share some feedback that I've received from some of our visitors last week. Well done to everyone who made the day a success! "I would just like to pass on our thanks and appreciation of you and the Eden Valley Club’s work for the Trivets Ride. Everything was so efficient, and everyone so friendly and helpful. It made the ride a real pleasure, despite the weather. I abandoned at lunchtime, too wet, too cold, and greatly appreciated all the care attention, soup and puddings we were given. My son David completed the ride, so family honour was upheld.   Please pass on our thanks to everyone, it was a great effort and a smashing day, we look forward to 2028, just put in your order for good weather nice and early."   "I would just like to thank you and the rest of Eden Valley CC for organising the Trivet Ride 2025. I must say it was very well organised event, well planned and good communication from the initial email right through. If you could pass on m...

Challenge Ride in the Cevennes/Ardeche area of Southern France 20-27 September 2025

My close friend came off his bike on a cattle grid at the bottom of Wrynose Pass recently and his injuries will prevent him from going on a planned trip this autumn.  We have been given a few days by the travel company to find someone else before they cancel the place so, if anyone is interested, the full trip details are on the "Marmot Tours" Website or just contact me.  The trip is six days of supported riding with a choice of routes.  Marmot offer transport to and from Marseille Airport but flights need to be booked separately.  I will be driving out for a longer stay in the area.  I know most of the group who are going (about 20 in total but we don't ride together) and they are very welcoming.  It would be great if any EV member would like to go bearing in mind that you would have to put up with sharing a hotel room with me.  If there is any response I will take the first person to commit to definitely wishing to go.   John Patrick ...

Ride of the falling rain

The reason for the unusual name of this ride is because we will be riding to Eskdalemuir.    This area statistically has the highest level of rainfall in the UK - higher even than Borrowdale I have read.  The latest forecast I have come across suggests it will be dry and sunny.   Eskdalemuir is my favourite place and whatever route one takes to get there is scenic.    We will meet at the Sycamore Cafe in Longtown at 9.30am on Wednesday.      The route will include Claygate to Langholm, Bentpath and the B709 to Eskdalemuir for lunch at the community hub.    A short distance beyond the hub is the Samye Ling Buddhist temple.   If you have not been before it is worth a visit.   After lunch we return to Longtown via Castle O’er and Chapelknowe.. I hope to see some of you on the ride Total distance is 55 miles.   The route is  here

3 Ride Sunday 6th July Langwathby to Melkinthorpe

9.30 start from the Green at Langwathby. Gradual ride up to Skirwith, down to Appleby and up to Morland then the cafe stop at Melkinthorpe. Back via Cliburn, over the hill behind centreparcs and back via Ousby and Gamblesby. Trivets - what a great day!!

1 think John's photos and Les's comments say it all - what a great event it was. Shame about the weather - we expected a few showers but not extended downpours and it always amazes me how stoic cyclists are. Special thanks to Claire for taking the responsibility for organising all the catering and most importantly to Bill O who brought the whole project together. I won't pick anyone else out by name but this event couldn't happen without the support of all the club - the soup and crumble makers, the registration officers,  and all those helping on the day whether washing up in the kitchen or serving up or just lending a hand when they could see it was needed. A big 'thank you' to the ride leaders - without you it couldn't have happened. Alison

EVCUK Tri-Vets 2025

Image
For the riders, & anyone else, not in the WhatsApp group here are the photos from today's fantastic event as promised. Just like to say a big thanks to the committee, organisers & volunteers for all the 'sterling' work to make it another successful EVCUK event 👍

Tri Vets - Brief Aftermath

A superb event - except for the weather!  Copious thanks to all the organisers, route planners, map makers printed and gpx, risk assessors, leaders, back up transport, helpers on the day and of course the catering team and food contributors. Every detail was impeccably organised and executed so all went like clockwork on the day. The staff at Mosedale meeting house 11's also did a super job with yummy cakes despite an influx of nearly all the groups at the same time. No specific nominees - but you all know the immense amount you individually contributed to make the day an unqualified success - except for the weather! Many thanks indeed from  Les (still somewhat overfull of crumble)

Reminder - Parker and Janet from Corsica visiting UK

For those who know Parker and Janet, they will be staying in Carlisle from Wed 16 th July to Thurs 24 th July.     It would be good to meet up with them.  Anyone interesting in meeting them should make contact using their email addresses or mobile numbers shown in the EV members address list.

I'd welcome some company on this scenic ride, 55miles around 3000ft, starting at 9.30am Sunday morning from Dalston car parks.  A game of 2 halves, the first half rather hilly, the second quite flat.  All being well we'll have a coffee stop at Cockermouth.   Route is essentially out via Caldbeck and back via Wigton and can be found  HERE   Please message me on 07770475915 if you intend to join me

Wednesday 11th June: 11 bridges across the Caldew

A two bike ride of 35 miles leaving Dalston at 9.30. Route  HERE . About 18 miles to the Quaker Meeting House at Mosedale for refreshments (perhaps by 11.30). Here we may meet up with Dave's ride from Armathwaite (see post below). The ride out often follows very minor roads and is a bit of an exploration as we criss-cross the Caldew several times. Obviously river crossings create a bit of up-and-down! So a slowish pace. The route back is a bit more direct and crosses the river only once at the White Bridge in Dalston. Newsletter from Alison who is 'off the grid' in Scotland!

Hello, New month, new email! It’s great now that the days are getting longer and we’ve had enough sunshine to start tempting us outdoors again – of course, many of you haven’t stopped going out through the winter anyway! This email is just a quick update primarily about three things. If you haven’t noted the date for the Trivets – Wednesday 2 July, based at Dalston Village Hall, near Carlisle – please put it on your calendar now. The details are on the blog and places are limited so if you want to join in this challenge please register as soon as possible which you can do via the blog link. We also need volunteers to help on the day so if you don’t think you can rise to the challenge of cycling 100k or 100 miles, we still need you! You can sign up on the volunteer link on the blog. It is a great opportunity to come and meet fellow club members – my washing up stint back in 2010 has led to making many new friends and having plenty of adventures with the club. Our next plann...

Trivets Wednesday 2 July 2025

We had another successful planning meeting on Thursday – thanks to all those who came along. If it isn’t there already, please put the date of 2 July in your diary for our Trivets event starting from Dalston Victory Hall. This is a great opportunity to showcase our lovely area to visitors and the figure of 8 route from Dalston, taking in Mungrisdale in the morning and the Solway coast in the afternoon, does just that. We’ve been running Trivets events at least from 2010 – that’s as far back as Nigel and I go – and even if you aren’t up to the riding, it’s always a great day, meeting like minded cyclists and having fun. We can’t do this without the full participation of the club so we hope you will volunteer to help. There is a form to complete to help us spread the jobs around and to make sure we don’t end up with not enough soup and too much crumble! Please take a moment to complete it here Registration for entry is also now open; visit our website or go directly via this link ...

Club Jerseys/Gilets and other branded items

Image
I hope you have all seen our great new design of tops especially as modelled by Adella and Gary. We have an opportunity to order more at the ‘bulk buy’ rate as long as we are able to order 10 or more items. If you aren’t sure of your size, you can try on samples which are currently with Rosie and Phil Blanshard in Penrith – please contact them to arrange a visit. Please also have a look at the list of items available from the Impsport shop  and insert password EVCUK1921. Please don’t buy direct as we need to maximise numbers buying through the club to get the best price. Anyone who hasn’t yet ordered a club jersey/gilet will receive a £15 subsidy for the first item ordered. Please let me know what you would like us to order no later than 31 st March so that we have the goods for our Spring cycling. Alison 07500 564922 longworth913@btinternet.com 01768 881066

Trivets planning meeting tomorrow Thursday 13th March starting at (or soon after) 10.30 am

Hello everyone - just a reminder that we will be meeting tomorrow at the Daffodils cafe (which is at St Andrew's Churchyard opposite the big church just beyond the entrance to Penrith Library) to discuss our planning for this year's Trivets challenge ride. This is a great event and we hope as many club members will support it as possible to make it the success we have seen in previous years. The meeting will begin at 10.30 (subject to my chairing the 10 am committee meeting efficiently). We meet in the room upstairs. Alison 07500 564922

Book early to make sure you can get the room of your choice! This is a 'book yourself' holiday in a great area for road cycling, gravelling and MTB and the more members of the club that can make it, the more fun we will have. I hope a few of you will be getting it in your diaries now. Any questions, please contact me. With regard to the deposit paid by some of you earlier for the exclusive use option which we were not able to pursue, I will be in touch very soon about returning it to you after I have met the Treasurer this afternoon. Holiday at Cote Ghyll Mill Youth Hostel - plan B

You can reply with your dates here   As we said in the blog posted 3rd February, we identified what we think is an excellent venue for a club holiday at Cote Ghyll Mill Youth Hostel near Osmotherley , east of Northallerton . There looks to be a great choice of road cycling gravelling and MTB nearby. As you will have realised, there was insufficient take-up for us to take exclusive use of the Hostel as we suggested in the blog. However, there was quite a bit of interest so we’re now looking at plan B which is a 3-day ‘book yourself’ option Friday to Monday. I’ve set out the accommodation and prices in detail below. Hostels aren’t what they used to be (expectations require them to be a bit smarter to survive) and each room has its own en-suite facilities which pushes up the price. Prices are bed/room only – no food included as we’re not on the exclusive use booking terms. There is a 10% discount for 3 nights or more. If you want the cheapest option...

Holiday Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st September

With thanks to Adella, we have identified an option for a holiday at Cote Ghyll Mill Youth Hostel near Osmotherley , east of Northallerton . There looks to be a great choice of road cycling gravelling and MTB nearby.  We are proposing to book the hostel entirely for our use from Thursday 18th September to Sunday 21st September . The property does not do self-catering; we either take B & B or full board including a packed lunch and 2 course evening meal and the full board option is very economical so that is what we propose. The property has 14 bedrooms each with 2, 4 or 6 beds in them and all of them are ensuite. I have worked on the basis of 2 people sharing a room but one room (at least) could be turned into a single-sex dorm style room. They are all bunk beds but 5 of the rooms have a lower bunk which is a double bed. If 2 people are in a room for 4 (or 6) they will both be able to have a lower bunk I have worked out the cost on the basis of 2 people sharing each roo...
