Newsletter from Alison who is 'off the grid' in Scotland!

Hello, New month, new email! It’s great now that the days are getting longer and we’ve had enough sunshine to start tempting us outdoors again – of course, many of you haven’t stopped going out through the winter anyway! This email is just a quick update primarily about three things. If you haven’t noted the date for the Trivets – Wednesday 2 July, based at Dalston Village Hall, near Carlisle – please put it on your calendar now. The details are on the blog and places are limited so if you want to join in this challenge please register as soon as possible which you can do via the blog link. We also need volunteers to help on the day so if you don’t think you can rise to the challenge of cycling 100k or 100 miles, we still need you! You can sign up on the volunteer link on the blog. It is a great opportunity to come and meet fellow club members – my washing up stint back in 2010 has led to making many new friends and having plenty of adventures with the club. Our next plann...

Trivets Wednesday 2 July 2025

We had another successful planning meeting on Thursday – thanks to all those who came along. If it isn’t there already, please put the date of 2 July in your diary for our Trivets event starting from Dalston Victory Hall. This is a great opportunity to showcase our lovely area to visitors and the figure of 8 route from Dalston, taking in Mungrisdale in the morning and the Solway coast in the afternoon, does just that. We’ve been running Trivets events at least from 2010 – that’s as far back as Nigel and I go – and even if you aren’t up to the riding, it’s always a great day, meeting like minded cyclists and having fun. We can’t do this without the full participation of the club so we hope you will volunteer to help. There is a form to complete to help us spread the jobs around and to make sure we don’t end up with not enough soup and too much crumble! Please take a moment to complete it here Registration for entry is also now open; visit our website or go directly via this link ...

Club Jerseys/Gilets and other branded items

Image
I hope you have all seen our great new design of tops especially as modelled by Adella and Gary. We have an opportunity to order more at the ‘bulk buy’ rate as long as we are able to order 10 or more items. If you aren’t sure of your size, you can try on samples which are currently with Rosie and Phil Blanshard in Penrith – please contact them to arrange a visit. Please also have a look at the list of items available from the Impsport shop  and insert password EVCUK1921. Please don’t buy direct as we need to maximise numbers buying through the club to get the best price. Anyone who hasn’t yet ordered a club jersey/gilet will receive a £15 subsidy for the first item ordered. Please let me know what you would like us to order no later than 31 st March so that we have the goods for our Spring cycling. Alison 07500 564922 longworth913@btinternet.com 01768 881066

Trivets planning meeting tomorrow Thursday 13th March starting at (or soon after) 10.30 am

Hello everyone - just a reminder that we will be meeting tomorrow at the Daffodils cafe (which is at St Andrew's Churchyard opposite the big church just beyond the entrance to Penrith Library) to discuss our planning for this year's Trivets challenge ride. This is a great event and we hope as many club members will support it as possible to make it the success we have seen in previous years. The meeting will begin at 10.30 (subject to my chairing the 10 am committee meeting efficiently). We meet in the room upstairs. Alison 07500 564922

For more details, see my post of February19th. Everyone who has shown an interest can make the dates of Friday 12 to Monday 15 September so those are the dates we are going for. Book early to make sure you can get the room of your choice! This is a 'book yourself' holiday in a great area for road cycling, gravelling and MTB and the more members of the club that can make it, the more fun we will have. I hope a few of you will be getting it in your diaries now. Any questions, please contact me. With regard to the deposit paid by some of you earlier for the exclusive use option which we were not able to pursue, I will be in touch very soon about returning it to you after I have met the Treasurer this afternoon. Holiday at Cote Ghyll Mill Youth Hostel - plan B

You can reply with your dates here   As we said in the blog posted 3rd February, we identified what we think is an excellent venue for a club holiday at Cote Ghyll Mill Youth Hostel near Osmotherley , east of Northallerton . There looks to be a great choice of road cycling gravelling and MTB nearby. As you will have realised, there was insufficient take-up for us to take exclusive use of the Hostel as we suggested in the blog. However, there was quite a bit of interest so we’re now looking at plan B which is a 3-day ‘book yourself’ option Friday to Monday. I’ve set out the accommodation and prices in detail below. Hostels aren’t what they used to be (expectations require them to be a bit smarter to survive) and each room has its own en-suite facilities which pushes up the price. Prices are bed/room only – no food included as we’re not on the exclusive use booking terms. There is a 10% discount for 3 nights or more. If you want the cheapest option...

3 Bike Ride from Armathwaite bridge Wednesday 19th

Wind light from the SE and temp might even reach double figures. Hope to see some others out.  Start specially to please the 'Northern Chapter' < Route > Let me know if you intend coming 07711842885 text or WhatsApp  Geoff

Holiday Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st September

With thanks to Adella, we have identified an option for a holiday at Cote Ghyll Mill Youth Hostel near Osmotherley , east of Northallerton . There looks to be a great choice of road cycling gravelling and MTB nearby.  We are proposing to book the hostel entirely for our use from Thursday 18th September to Sunday 21st September . The property does not do self-catering; we either take B & B or full board including a packed lunch and 2 course evening meal and the full board option is very economical so that is what we propose. The property has 14 bedrooms each with 2, 4 or 6 beds in them and all of them are ensuite. I have worked on the basis of 2 people sharing a room but one room (at least) could be turned into a single-sex dorm style room. They are all bunk beds but 5 of the rooms have a lower bunk which is a double bed. If 2 people are in a room for 4 (or 6) they will both be able to have a lower bunk I have worked out the cost on the basis of 2 people sharing each roo...

New Order for Club Kit

Image
Hi everyone We are going to do the second order for kit shortly. At the moment we have 7 people who have expressed an interest in more kit - we need 10 for a minimum order at a sensible price. The committee have generously extended the offer of £15 off the first item you buy so those of you who haven't already ordered and are thinking of doing so you can make use of this offer. Anyone else who has second or third items will pay the list price which I have included below. At the moment I am trying to get some more samples of other items which people have requested. I intend to get the full range of women's jerseys as samples, plus samples of the long sleeve jacket, waterproof jacket and winter jacket as people have already expressed an interest. I am enclosing the link to Impsport here  Custom Cycling Clothing  and the cycling items which they do. If you would like a sample size of any item could you let me know by Monday 10th February and I will include it in the sample ...

Trivets planning meeting Monday morning 6th January at Booths at 10.30 am

We hope to see as many of you as possible (weather permitting) on Monday so that we can plan our Trivets event on 2nd July. We will be discussing: Base/venue Routes Catering Numbers Timetable - lead up/on the day Publicity Cost Volunteer roles Let's create more happy memories for our visitors in July. Alison 07500 564922

Happy New Year!!!

Yes, we've arrived in 2025 - not only an occasion to resolve to get out cycling more often but also 2025 is the year of our Triennial Cycling Event known as the Trivets! These events are organised all over the country by Cycling UK's member groups, aimed at people aged 50 or over, encouraging them to participate in a ride of significant length (100 miles or 100km). We have run a number of popular Trivets rides over the years and have already chosen the date - Wednesday 2nd July. Apart from the date (and even that could change) everything else is up for discussion - the base, the route, the catering, the leaders - so please come along to our meeting on Monday 6th January at 10.30 am to add your thoughts. The success of this event depends on the participation and support of our members. The more the merrier. We will be meeting in the upstairs cafe at Booths at 10.30 following a short (hopefully) Committee meeting starting at 10 am. Hope to see several of you next Monday. Wishi...
