Paul Cumella

I'm really sad to be sharing the news that Paul died unexpectedly yesterday. He had a long history with the club which goes back several years before me, as secretary, ride leader and champion of the 'moderate rides'. He and his beloved wife Sue were keen cyclists and members of more than one club and I think they sometimes rode a tandem. Paul was no stranger to illness having fought off his own cancer and losing Sue in 2022. Paul continued to embrace life and looked after his friendships. We would see him occasionally at club cafe stops and he celebrated his 80th birthday in style in March surrounded by friends reflecting his multiple interests including his membership of the Cockermouth Ukelele Band. Paul's daughter Rosie is well known to club members - she even joined us 'oldies' on the occasional club holiday and I have her permission to share this lovely photo from 2023 when Paul was pleased to be at her side for her wedding. Our thoughts are with Rosie at this difficult time. 

Details of the funeral arrangements will be shared when they are known.

Holiday Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st September

  With thanks to Adella, we have identified an option for a holiday at Cote Ghyll Mill Youth Hostel near Osmotherley , east of Northallerton . There looks to be a great choice of road cycling gravelling and MTB nearby.  We are proposing to book the hostel entirely for our use from Thursday 18th September to Sunday 21st September . The property does not do self-catering; we either take B & B or full board including a packed lunch and 2 course evening meal and the full board option is very economical so that is what we propose. The property has 14 bedrooms each with 2, 4 or 6 beds in them and all of them are ensuite. I have worked on the basis of 2 people sharing a room but one room (at least) could be turned into a single-sex dorm style room. They are all bunk beds but 5 of the rooms have a lower bunk which is a double bed. If 2 people are in a room for 4 (or 6) they will both be able to have a lower bunk I have worked out the cost on the basis of 2 people sharing each roo...

Trivets Wednesday 2 July 2025

We had another successful planning meeting on Thursday – thanks to all those who came along. If it isn’t there already, please put the date of 2 July in your diary for our Trivets event starting from Dalston Victory Hall. This is a great opportunity to showcase our lovely area to visitors and the figure of 8 route from Dalston, taking in Mungrisdale in the morning and the Solway coast in the afternoon, does just that. We’ve been running Trivets events at least from 2010 – that’s as far back as Nigel and I go – and even if you aren’t up to the riding, it’s always a great day, meeting like minded cyclists and having fun. We can’t do this without the full participation of the club so we hope you will volunteer to help. There is a form to complete to help us spread the jobs around and to make sure we don’t end up with not enough soup and too much crumble!
