3 Bike Ride on Sunday from Raughton Head

As I look at the weather forecast for Sunday I think I must be bonkers to even think about going out on my bike, but then again I think that the forecast is very often worse than the actual weather that's experienced on the day.  I will be leaving from Raughton Head at 10:00 to cycle down to Lowther for brunch  (direct route around 21 miles). Return route will likely be via Askham, Pooley Bridge, Stainton, Newbiggin etc depending on who is coming along (hopefully with a good tail wind). You're all most welcome to join me Let me know so I don't set off without you..... Bill  07921 297 045

Too cold to cycle? Not yesterday...

No ride leader will ever be criticised for cancelling a ride on safety grounds but Rosie and Phil held their nerve and many of us were grateful! Our 10 am winter starting time gave the sun time to do its thing and most roads were dry with ice and frost limited - mainly - to the verges. There were 16 cyclists enjoying brunch at Appleby Hub with 2 non-cyclists including one very welcome guest. So don't put your bike into hibernation for the winter - it was a beautiful day and well worth turning out. Thanks to Phil and Rosie, Alison 07500 564922

You may be receiving an email...

When the new Committee met, we realised that our blog may not be read by everyone so I have just sent out an email, I hope, to all club members to update everyone and asking them to confirm receipt. If you haven't had it, it may be that we don't have your current email address - if that's the case, please send me a message - 07500 564922. If you are regular blog readers, you're probably reading everything for the second time - sorry! But we want the club to live up to its reputation for being inclusive for everyone, including those who don't read the blog! Best wishes to all, Stay warm. Alison

Wed 20th rides from Beacon Edge

Due to the sub zero temps Rosie and I are going to combine our rides into a 2.5 bike ride from Beacon Edge opposite the lay-by, leaving at 10am. We still intend to go to Appleby hub via Cliburn. Please let Rosie know if you intend to join us on 07818241833.

Committee news and dates for your diary

The new Committee met for the first time yesterday. We are all committed to keeping the club functioning and the meeting went well. You can access minutes through the documents section of the website. Dates for your 2025 diary: Festive lunch - we have chosen Saturday 18th January which was marginally the most popular/possible for people. We will shortly be posting details on the blog for you to make your choices and pay with a deadline of Sunday 15 December to get it all sorted before Christmas. Tri-vets event on Wednesday 2nd July - 2025 is the year of the tri-ennial Cycling UK event where groups organise a 100 mile/km route for over 50s and we have usually been well supported. This is an opportunity for the club to showcase what it does and the area it covers so we hope you will get involved. Our first planning meeting will be in Penrith on Monday 6th January at 10.30 am - venue to be confirmed. Several of us are hoping to Ride to the Sun - from Carlisle to Edinburgh, overnight setti

Explanation of the cafe stop...

Back in the mists of time, when the club only organised one run on a Sunday and one on a Wednesday, people who didn't want to do the whole ride would target the cafe stop on the ride so that they still had a motivation to cycle. This was formalised back in 2012 when we added an 'ALT' entry in the runs list so that people could go to a cafe stop without a formal ride there. It was particularly useful for the more moderate riders in the club. In 2017 we moved to the 2/3 bike ride classification but continued with the cafe stop as 'self guided ride to coffee'. Most of the cafes are within 10 miles of Penrith so reasonably central but still provide a purpose for getting on your bike on a Wednesday and Sunday even if the main advertised ride is not for you. A self led ride to the coffee stop can be as easy - or as hard - as you choose to make it. If you set out from Penrith and you're going to Up Front it isn't far, but you can make it further by adding in a few

2 bike ride tomorrow, Sunday 10 November

I will be leaving Langwathby Village Green - meet at the bus shelter - at 10 and taking the road through Great Salkeld/Salkeld Dykes, skirting Lazonby and crossing the A6 to Calthwaite/Hutton End aiming to be at UpFront for coffee at 11.30. Probably shorter route return via Plumpton... Anyone welcome to join me but remember, please, that I am a slow non-ebike rider and wear extra layers so that you don't get cold! Alison 07500 564922

Challenge ride total raised keeps on going up...

Despite our public announcement - see The Cumberland and Westmorland Herald on 2 November - that our fund raising event raised £2340 plus Gift Aid, we were wrong! I had overlooked a very substantial Just Giving contribution raised by Harvey - thank you, Harvey - of £300 and an extra £5 in Geoff's Just Giving account, which means... We raised £2645 plus Gift Aid of £321.25 which brings the total to £2966.25... Once again, a big 'Thank You' to all those involved, Alison

Club Strip - gilets are now available - order deadline Sunday 10 November midnight

Hello everyone, Impsport have confirmed that they can do a gilet. The cost is £72.50 plus VAT = £87 minus the £15 personal discount if you haven't already placed an order. The gilets are showerproof and windproof. The sample sizes have been returned so you can't try for size. Basically, the sizes work out the same as the jerseys as the gilet already accounts for having to be put on over a top/jacket. Time is limited as the price is dependent on this being attached to the earlier order. I need to know by Sunday midnight if you would like one.  Alison 07500 564922

3 Bike ride Wednesday 6th Nov(N click read more for links)

Ride starts at 0930 at Frenchfields Penrith where there is some parking at the side of the road. <The route> is about 55 miles but could be shortened if the weather is grim - at the moment its winter anticyclonic ie 'grey' but low wind speeds and fairly chilly! We'll stop at Morland for early lunch?(12.00). It would be great to see some others out - let me know if you intend to join us at the start or anywhere else along the route! 07711 842885  Text or WhatsApp - Geoff

I have deleted my ride on Wednesday as am not able to lead due to a knee injury. Hope someone else will fill the slot. Rosie

New Blog theme

Let me know how you find the new look Blogger. Unfortunately it wasn't a straightforward changeover and I had to invite all authors again. If you want access to the blog as a runs leader or for whatever reason just send me a note. It is easier if you have a google email address but it is not necessary as long as you have an account with google. The advantages of this new set up which may change in a few minor ways is that it works better with a mobile or tablet. There is a 'hamburger' menu at top left which you can access other pages like runs list and look through the archive of posts to see past posts.

DON'T MISS GEOFF'S IMPORTANT MESSAGE BELOW. As there's no ride promulgated for Wednesday I'm riding to the Pot Place (listed coffee meet) from Dalston, at 09.30 hours, on Wednesday 23rd. The first part of the route is 19 miles & after coffee/brunch I'll just be 'winging' it back to Dalston. Approx 40 to 50 miles overall.  Be great if anyone fancies joining me. Rolling runs list - look again URGENT

There appears to have been a glitch on the runs list where all the venues column disappeared. 😱 Since Mike is I believe away I have run it back to a previous version so ........ Can all ride leaders who have recently put up rides - for which many thanks check your input.

Thanks/tomorrow's ?bike ride?/club Jerseys

First of all a big 'thank you' to those who turned out for our AGM today. Full minutes will be available before long: we're still looking for someone to fill that role of Secretary! Tomorrow I was planning to lead a ride after the coffee stop from Melmerby Village Bakery north to Castle Carrock and back, leaving the Bakery at noon. I must admit that I'm not feeling confident; although the rain may have eased by the afternoon, the wind is still predicted to be Beaufort Scale 4 gusting 9 from the south-west. I will be at the Bakery anyway and if anyone wants to come along we can discuss whether the ride can safely go ahead. It's a lovely evening now - how quickly things can change. If you come to the Bakery tomorrow (or to our house in Melmerby any time we're here) I have for the moment the charge of the sample club Jerseys (see Adella's post of 30 September) so please come and try one for size. I can take orders. The price is based on having an order of 10-10

Club News

Thank you to everyone who joined in our Challenge Ride. The total raised will be confirmed at our AGM but I think we have just exceeded £2,500 for Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw - surpassing my wildest dreams! Our AGM is on Saturday 19th October - see blog below. We hope for a good turn-out - the Committee needs input from all its members to keep the club doing what you want it to do. It is always a good social occasion especially if you come for the Bring and Share lunch - please register as we need numbers for the lunch. See also the blog below about the proposed purchase of new Club Jerseys with thanks to Adella for all the hard work she has put in. We had a sociable week as the coffee stop on Wednesday at Morland was supported by 19 riders, 5 of whom came with me and another 5 dipped their toe in the water with me! It was good to see Claire and Eileen too even if they're not yet quite ready to cycle! Coming up on Wednesday Bill O is leading a ride from Hesket Newmarket to Cocke

Club Jerseys  Hi all, Below is a mock up of the new pattern for our club jerseys. Over the last few weeks I have socialized the designs at various rides and coffee stops and a lot of you have expressed an interest in purchasing either a long sleeve or short sleeve jersey The triangle design appears to be the winner so that is what we are going for.  Next steps: I have ordered some men's and women's T1 and T2 sizes which I will bring along to the AGM and some club rides where appropriate so folks can try them on. T1 sizes are more generous than T2 sizes which are apparently more "racer" fit which may suit some people so I got both types for you to try. Both short and long sleeve have a full zip down the front. We have asked Impsport, the manufacturers, to also include a zip on one of the pockets at the back after your feedback. This will be an extra £5 but worth it to store keys/cards etc.. Once we get all your orders it should take around 3-4 weeks to turnaround I hav

3 Bike Ride 09.30 Sunday 29th September

See Alison's blog below. 50 mile 3 bike ride starting at 09.30 hours from Dalston. Riding out to & along the Solway estuary taking in Anthorn, Bowness on Solway, Burgh by Sands & Beaumont. Route  >> HERE << Coffee/lunch will be at Bowness (31 miles) where we should meet up with Alisons group. It is a fairly easyish, shortish, flattish route & so I would expect to get to Bowness around 11.30 to 12.00. There may be a 'pop' up refreshments stop (hot drinks & snacks) at Beaumont but I can't guarantee it will be open, so byo snacks if needed. The weather forecast around the "Island", at this time, looks reasonable. Though there may be an odd shower or two & quite cool. Let me (or Alison, if joining her ride) know if you are coming as we may need to pre warn the cafe. We are hoping for a big club turnout 🤞😁 John H (text or WhatsApp) 07855534727

Rides from Dalston on Sunday 29 September

We're starting in the north of the County at the car park in Dalston near Carlisle to explore a lovely route out to the coast to Bowness-on-Solway, the start of the Hadrian's Wall walk, with a long section alongside the lovely Solway Estuary between Bowness and Burgh by Sands. If the weather is encouraging we will include the Anthorn Circuit. Mine is a '2-bike ride' standard and, as you know, I am a slow non-e-bike rider but the terrain (fairly flat) is flattering and I would anticipate a speed of around 11 mph though with a group it may be less. My ride is planned to be 40 miles. John will be leading a longer 3 bike ride and hopefully the two groups will meet for a cafe lunch at Bowness-on-Solway. Please bring a snack to eat by the roadside. Some of us have become a bit resistant to travelling a bit further for our rides or putting the bikes in the car to drive to the start. I hope people will take the plunge and join me (or John). Guests are welcome to join us for 3 r

Beacon Edge lay-by

It has been brought to our attention that we may be causing upset by parking and gathering in the lay-by on the cemetery side of Beacon Edge. It is a convenient road to park on, but from now on it would be better if we parked and gathered on the roadside opposite the lay-by. Thanks Rosie and Phil

A few snaps on the Website  Either use the button on the home page or here   Strange not many pics on the rides (could this have anything to do with the weather?) If anyone has any please send me copies for our records/publication

A big BIG THANK YOU!!!

To all those involved in today's Challenge rides.  We set out to give people a good day out, to showcase a bit of this lovely area where we live, to raise a bit of money for a very special charity, Eden Valley Hospice, and to have a lot of fun. We will have raised a significant amount of money for our chosen charity - we will blog when we know how much. We missed Claire in the kitchen and we could have done without the rain, but no-one complained - not much, anyway! Every one was well fed and proud at the end of it, including the organisers. Thank you to everyone who took part in any way; by providing soup or crumble (or both), helping in the organising or in the kitchen or simply by being out there cycling. Thanks to Border City Wheelers for the loan of their cycle signs. Special thanks to those who attended from Eden Valley Hospice and a special mention to Jonathan in the kitchen - please come again!  That goes for all of you - not just Jonathan. It's the people we meet who m

The return will be via Colby, Bolton and Culgaith. I hope some of you can join me. Ernest. 07549 131994 PS (GA) This ride will bear a remarkable resemblance to the Sunday 50km ride so those who cannot make it on Sunday could join Ernest. What's more they could contribute here !

3 Ride Sunday 8th

Scottish Solway Firth  A late Sunday '3' ride offering. A quick check of the BBC Weather app for Sunday shows thundery showers for the lakes and sunny for SW Scotland, so Scotland is the place to be! Ice cream stop at Powfoot if required? Total distance about 62miles, very flat so you can enjoy the scenery. Route I hope some of you can join me. Challenge Rides in aid of Eden Valley Hospice - Closing date 1st September

Image
As well as helpers we need as many members as possible to take part   in this event. We have had an encouraging response from lots of local cyclists and it would be good if we could also support this event by taking part. So I would encourage you to register ( see this page on our website ) and help support Eden Valley Hospice. There will have to be a closing date so that we can finalise catering and documentation and this will be the end of the month (actually Sunday 1st September) Routes for all at 50km, 100km and 160km - So get signed up Thanks  Geoff PS If you really cannot do the ride - how about a small donation to the cause which you can make here through Just Giving

2 bike ride on Sunday 25th August from Langwathby to Dufton

From Alison - my challenge, which I have chosen to accept, is to find a route from Langwathby to Dufton which is as different as possible from the route cycled by Nigel and others today. I have succeeded; my planned route overlaps Nigel's route by only 3.1 miles out and the same on return, but.... the back roads inevitably mean more hills and given that I have hardly been out on my bike since the last ride I put on I will be even slower than normal. So... if you fancy a slow meander along the lanes less travelled, my plan is to leave Langwathby bus shelter at 9.30 am on Sunday morning and take the road towards Skirwith. The rest is a (hilly) magical mystery tour! Total mileage according to Google is 27.8 miles Alison 07500 564922

Sunday 21 July 2-bike ride from Penrith

This is a classic Eden Valley route. We will be meeting at the cemetery on Beacon Edge with a view to departing at 9.30 am, meandering to Lazonby where we cross the river, and travelling via Gamblesby to Melmerby Village Bakery for coffee. Then we have the lovely fellside route to Appleby for lunch and return to Penrith via Colby and Cliburn. I think it's just over 40 miles. Some of you will know that I am a slow non-ebike rider so don't expect a fast ride and bring extra clothes if it's chilly. It is a lovely route to be taken at a leisurely pace. Please let me know if you're coming so that I can give the cafes some warning; I imagine there will be more for coffee than for lunch! I hope not to be alone, Alison 07500 564922

I will be leaving Langwathby (if in doubt, meet at the bus shelter on the village green) at 9.30 to take a northern loop via Great Salkeld, Thiefside and Calthwaite to the Up Front cafe. Return route to be decided taking into account the wishes of the group (I believe in Democracy!) Hope to see some of you there. It would help if you could give me an idea if you're coming: Sunday at UpFront could be busy so it might be worth booking a table... Alison 07500 564922

Wow - what a turn-out!!!!

Despite the forecast and including some late entrants (even after they had seen the forecast) 12 of us set out from Greystoke, joined by 2 more en route and 2 who made their own way to the Mosedale cafe where we swelled numbers considerably on a very wet day! It's a privilege to be able to cycle with such a positive bunch (except for the one who said the Club needs a Chair who can control the weather - you know who you are, Jim!) Thanks for the company and for making a fun morning out of a wet one! Alison

Photos...

Hello everyone, We regularly share photos on the blog which is open to all members of the general public and we are being asked for some to go in the Herald in a future article. Obviously, photos which show the breadth of our membership and how much we are all enjoying ourselves are what we're after. However, we realise some people may prefer not to share photos of themselves. If you are one of those people please can you let me or one of the Committee know - if possible by Friday this week - so that we can take this into account now and in the future. Thank you, I hope to see some of you at Maulds Meaburn tomorrow, Alison 07500 564922

3 bike ride to Maulds Meaburn Wed 3rd July

Leaving Beacon Edge at 9.30 I will be going to Maulds Meaburn via Lowther and Shap.(22 miles). Return to be decided at the coffee stop. All welcome but 3 bike ride pace. Phil 07810751189.

2 bike ride Wednesday 3 July to Maulds Meaburn Village Institute

An opportunity to support a pop-up cafe in aid of funds for the village institute with coffee and cake - what's not to like? Eating cake is almost a public duty! I will be leaving Langwathby at 9.30 and cycling a pretty direct route via Temple Sowerby and Kings Meaburn, possibly returning via Morland. Familiar roads, less familiar venue, never dull. Company welcome. Alison 07500 564922

2-bike ride to the coffee stop at Acorn Bank

Sorry for the late notice; I intend to leave Langwathby at 9.30 and follow at least part of the route from my Dufton ride last Sunday so sorry about any repetition! Up past the Feed Mill, to Skirwith, Blencarn and Milburn then down that fabulous hill into Kirkby Thore and thence to Acorn Bank where I think we're likely to arrive by 10.45. Return will be more direct as I have an afternoon appointment but we'll see how we feel... Alison 07500 564922

Pot Place tomorrow Wednesday 26 June

I have booked a table in the schoolroom for 10 people at 11 o'clock. It's a bit easier for us to gather together and talk (and add extra chairs if numbers swell). Hope to meet up with a few for coffee... Alison 07500 564922

Wednesday 26th June: Tan Hill and Buttertubs

One bike ride to the Pot Place on Wednesday 26 June

For those not feeling up to tackling Tan Hill and Buttertubs with Mike, I will be leading a gentle ride from Langwathby village green via Salkeld Dykes and by-passing Lazonby to cross the A6, through Calthwaite to coffee at the Pot Place. This is the scene of my spill with Rosie so I will be taking extra care to avoid pot holes. The most direct return route is only 7.2 miles but I may extend this depending on weather and the mood of the group.  I would enjoy company... Alison 07500 564922

Easy 2 bike ride tomorrow Sunday 23 June

Sorry for the late notice - Nigel and I seem to have been a bit clumsy falling off our bikes recently so I was uncertain whether we would be out... Progress is good and the decision has been made to cycle so I'm inviting anyone who wishes to join me at Langwathby, departing at the later time of 10 am as it should only take us an hour to get to the Post Box at Dufton. Our route will be up to Skirwith and along the higher fellside roads, returning via the lower fellside road through Kirkby Thore and Temple Sowerby without, I think, retracing any of our route out! The usual warning - I am always slow, probably compounded by not cycling much recently. Hope to see a few of you - it's been a long time! Alison

I promise I will not put it on again!  Starting at the Garage (Texaco/Spar) in Alston we back track to Garigill and then over into Nenthead so plenty of hills!(to make up for miles) and on down into Allenhead Town where there are numerous possibilities for refuelling. Late Notice Ride tomorrow (Sunday 19th May)

I shall be cycling to the 11s at the Old Village Bakery Melmerby tomorrow. I am intending to be at the bottom of the hill at Frenchfield Penrith for 0930 where it would be nice to meet others for the ride. (Alternatively you could start with me from Melmerby at 0830). My plan is to get to Melmerby for around 1100 by the usual routes through to Temple Sowerby (shorter route over Whinfell, longer via Temple Sowerby - 1.5 miles longer). The longer of these routes means you should have covered 17.5 odd miles (+ the 8 or so miles to Penrith for the eager rider).  For a return ride I propose to cycle to Renwick, Kirkoswald, Lazonby, Plumpton and thence back to Frenchfield (19.5 odd miles), OR, taking in Newton Reigny (24 odd miles). Pacing of Ride - '2'. Even if neither / none  of the options appeal to you I hope to see you at Melmerby. If you do intend to come with me, please let me know (07867 840534). Nigel

Change to Sunday(28th) 3 bike ride - NOW starting in Greystoke 0930

The weather forecast for the Alston/ Allendale area has changed to be wet-wet-wet. So I propose shifting the start to Greystoke 0930 as West is best! I am sure I can find a route involving a pass or two and the one I show below is  a suggestion at 100km. There are lots of possible stop offs too!  ROUTE HERE Failed again - I think I will have to leave the Alston ride until we get some predictably good weather.

Whoops!

In case you think I've gone a bit quiet... I was planning lots of cycling April and May with a view to doing the 100 mile 'Ride to the Sun' from Carlisle to Edinburgh on 22nd June, but... A tumble from my bike on 3rd April has kept me off my bike ever since and the gap between my current mileage and the above 100 miles is too great to bridge in the time available. I hope to be out and about and leading rides again soon. And I am mending 😃 Alison

3Bike Ride from Alston 0930. Sunday

The sharp eyed amongst us will notice that this is a ride where I was sole rider at the time of the 'great wind and rains!'  Starting a little away from the usual......0930 The Route starts from The Texaco / Spar garage on the way into Alston - plenty of parking NY 716462 or /// wooden.tragedy.newsreel   From there we go to Garrigill Nenthead Allendale Town (lunch stop) Whitfield Lanehead Slaggeyford and back to Alston on the N side of the S Tyne? At 70km this may not look much but there are a few hills - nevertheless it is spectacular countryside typical of the Northumbrian Penines. There is a good lunch stop in Allendale Town but bring supplies in case. (Allendale Forge cafe say they are open 9-16) Weather forecast is saying mild sunny showery and windy - take your pick! It would be good to have some company? ROUTE  Geoff  WhatsApp or text if you are coming 07711842885

Submission of response to Gov Consultation re E-BIKES (due before 26.4.24)

Cumbria Cycle Mayor (Richard Ingham) has posted today information about the above. Submissions are to be in before the end of Thursday. The proposed changes are to increase the Wattage permitted (for pedal cycles and so called EAPCs - electrically assisted pedal cycles) from 250 to 500 watts, and allowing 'twist and go' operation.  In view of the limitation in time I have drafted an outline of my thinking which I show below. I don't think my views are likely to be controversial for Club members (a brave expression).  PLEASE, please would you have a check through, even look at the regulation summary (I am not sure that you will make this link work but I am sure I have got all the right letters if not necessarily in the right .....) letting me have any contrary views. https://www.gov.uk/government/consultation/smarter-regulation-proposed-changes-to-legislation-for- electrically-assisted-pedal-cycles Smarter regulation: proposed changes to legislation for electrically assisted
