Explanation of the cafe stop...
Back in the mists of time, when the club only organised one run on a Sunday and one on a Wednesday, people who didn't want to do the whole ride would target the cafe stop on the ride so that they still had a motivation to cycle. This was formalised back in 2012 when we added an 'ALT' entry in the runs list so that people could go to a cafe stop without a formal ride there. It was particularly useful for the more moderate riders in the club. In 2017 we moved to the 2/3 bike ride classification but continued with the cafe stop as 'self guided ride to coffee'. Most of the cafes are within 10 miles of Penrith so reasonably central but still provide a purpose for getting on your bike on a Wednesday and Sunday even if the main advertised ride is not for you.
A self led ride to the coffee stop can be as easy - or as hard - as you choose to make it. If you set out from Penrith and you're going to Up Front it isn't far, but you can make it further by adding in a few loops. If you're travelling from Scotland, then it's a significant ride in its own right.
The blog is the main official channel for communication in the club but it isn't suitable for 'Are you going to coffee?' conversations. There are a few WhatsApp groups in the club which work for that sort of thing. I have set up a cafe WhatsApp group and please let me know if you wish to join. The idea is that you will find out who is going to be at the coffee stop - and maybe find someone to cycle with. Or, when you get there, you might find someone to cycle back with. Even if you don't cycle with anyone, it provides an incentive to ride.
It may sound as though we're more interested in cafes than in cycling. All I know is that it works. It has got me out on my bike on many days when I otherwise wouldn't have bothered. So I recommend you join the WhatsApp group and give it a go!
