Kielder Lakeside Way Trail - Wednesday 3rd September

56 mile ride starting from Newcastleton at 09.30, in the Scottish borders, with an option of 26 mile starting from Kielder Castle at 11.00 (approx). There is free parking at Douglas Square, Newcastleton (w3w ///remembers.games.desiring). Parking at Kielder Castle is not free (w3w ///receiving.spaces.slice).

There are no cafes on the first half of the route, though there is a small shop in Kielder Village (15 mile) for coffee, sandwiches, cake etc. It might be limited so BYO refreshments for a picnic. There are cafes at 28 miles or 35 miles on the 'lake'.

Although the Lakeside Way Trail is mostly off road it is well compacted & a decent surface for multi use & being suitable for all types of bikes. Some members have done it on road bikes with 25mm tyres without issue. I would recommend sturdy tyres of at least 28mm. This is a fairly easy route, though there are a few small inclines & sharp bends, in beautiful, scenic surroundings. You will not want to miss out 😉😁. Holiday Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st September

  With thanks to Adella, we have identified an option for a holiday at Cote Ghyll Mill Youth Hostel near Osmotherley , east of Northallerton . There looks to be a great choice of road cycling gravelling and MTB nearby.  We are proposing to book the hostel entirely for our use from Thursday 18th September to Sunday 21st September . The property does not do self-catering; we either take B & B or full board including a packed lunch and 2 course evening meal and the full board option is very economical so that is what we propose. The property has 14 bedrooms each with 2, 4 or 6 beds in them and all of them are ensuite. I have worked on the basis of 2 people sharing a room but one room (at least) could be turned into a single-sex dorm style room. They are all bunk beds but 5 of the rooms have a lower bunk which is a double bed. If 2 people are in a room for 4 (or 6) they will both be able to have a lower bunk I have worked out the cost on the basis of 2 people sharing each roo...

We had another successful planning meeting on Thursday – thanks to all those who came along. If it isn’t there already, please put the date of 2 July in your diary for our Trivets event starting from Dalston Victory Hall. This is a great opportunity to showcase our lovely area to visitors and the figure of 8 route from Dalston, taking in Mungrisdale in the morning and the Solway coast in the afternoon, does just that. We’ve been running Trivets events at least from 2010 – that’s as far back as Nigel and I go – and even if you aren’t up to the riding, it’s always a great day, meeting like minded cyclists and having fun. We can’t do this without the full participation of the club so we hope you will volunteer to help.
