CAFE STOP, SUNDAY 13TH NOVEMBER: UPFRONT GALLERY

You may already have noticed from the Runs List that Acorn Bank is closed for the winter and Upfront Gallery at Unthank is the replacement venue. As we are now into November, the meet time is around 11.30 (and as it is Remembrance Sunday this would seem appropriate).

CYCLING IN PENRITH

Cumbria County Council is consulting the public on a proposed pedestrianisation of Corney Square, Penrith (nearly opposite Arragons Cycles) and is holding another opportunity to see the plans at Penrith Library betweeen 3.45 and 5.45 p.m. on the 28th November. I have seen the plans and made a representation (on our club's behalf): 'Absence of provision of cyclists use. Local cyclists and cyclists arriving / cycling through Penrith are likely to see this area as a natural place to stop, rest or leave their bike to use the facilities afforded by the town. Absence of provision of bike stands securing bikes / propping up cycles is likely to inhibit this / take up space by leaving cycles secured to the 'furniture' of the location. It is important that the cycle stands are 'cycle friendly' i.e. not the type that stands the bike confined to a single wheel (risk of damage to rims / some bikes do not fit e.g. disc brakes or smaller wheels ...). Sheffield stands are very

EVCUK Seasonal Lunch - latest! Confirm you want to attend.

First, the majority of responders prefer a 'post New Year do'.......so...... I have booked '4 & 20' in Penrith as being central/easier to organise for 12.30 on the 14th January (apologies to those to whom this is not the best time or the best place!) Can those that still want to come please let me know so that I can confirm numbers - the price, and this is only an estimate until they have fixed a menu, is likely to be around £23 for two courses and £26 for three. The next step will then be for you to choose options from the menu, but until that is sent out can you simply confirm that you would like to attend, so that I can give them a firmer idea of the numbers. Please confirm that you would like to attend the EVCUK lunch at 12.30 on Saturday 14th Jan 2023 <here> (click the link) or by email to me or text (giving name! - you may not be in my contacts!) Thanks Geoff

Modest 2 bike ride on Sunday 30 October

The purpose is to link the coffee stop at UpFront with the last day of an archeological dig at Long Meg and her daughers. Official start is Langwathby at 9.35; I will be leaving Melmerby at 9. We will be going over Beacon Edge (yes, sorry, via Strawberry Hill) approx 10.15 with eta at UpFront at 11. From UpFront we will go via Lazonby to Long Meg. From there we can either go direct back to Langwathby or to Melmerby for lunch. Given the choice of places to join in, please let me know if you are coming and where you will be aiming to meet me. This will be the longest ride I have done for some time so the pace will be modest. I hope it appeals to someone! Alison

EVCUK Seasonal Lunch - please respond promptly (asap)

Looking ahead to Christmas and the New Year I have been asked to canvass opinion re the possibility of a Lunch get-together as has been popular in the past. Initially can I ask if members would prefer a pre Christmas or a post New Year date. I know that some times after New Year it is a nice event to look forward to which 'lets you down lightly' after the Christmas rush. Alternatively before seems more Festive perhaps.  Please let me know your preference on the above by responding here if you would come to such an event.  If you can't get the link to work just send me an email Whatever the outcome I will attempt to secure a booking at Four & Twenty   in Penrith on a Saturday lunchtime and I will post more details later  Geoff A Your Secretary!

Ride on Sunday 30th October from Melmerby 0900

I have not put down details so far of a ride this Sunday so I hope this is not too late to attract company! I propose a loop south (as the wind is from the South it will push us home!) along the fellside then down to Orton (lunch stop) and back through Shap Bampton Penrith returning to Melmerby after about 60mi and < 1000m climbing. This is not a hilly ride although it probably qualifies as a 3 bike ride on account of the distance. We can shorten it if need be(!) by returning along the Lyvennet valley (50mi).  Remember the clocks go back an hour on Sunday hence the earlier start time of 0900. It is probably a good idea to bring lights as from now on the evenings will be drawing in. Hope to see some of you at the start Geoff Route < here >

Most members will know Peter Angood, a club stalwart, and the difficulties he has been going through due to illness. Peter has been admitted into Eden Valley Hospice, Durdar Road, Carlisle, CA3 4SD where I visited him yesterday.  As you can imagine he is very poorly, very tired and (I believe) on strong medication. Though conversation wasn't easy he said he didn't mind me letting the club members know his situation and that visitors would be welcome. If anyone would like to visit Peter then info can be found here -  https://www.edenvalleyhospice.org/#   Although visits can be made anytime it would be advisable to phone ahead as if Peter is having treatment or not 'up' for visitors then admission will be denied.
Received recently - you never know when this might be useful! Could also be interesting! Hi there, It has been suggested that we get in touch with you… we don’t have a cafe but we do offer free water top ups here at www.Brightsidebarn.co.uk feel free to share with your members and web visitors. If our sign is out we’re in 😊 Best wishes, Cathryn Brightside Barn Art Studio and Gallery Clifton Dykes Near Penrith CA10 2DG   G

Three famous people at Hawick

Image

Following the meet at the Pot Place on Saturday 4th Sept Parker requested that his appreciation should expressed to all attendees. He texted : - " Thank you so much for organising today, it was brilliant ! " I understand that Parker and Janet are now touring in the Scottish Borders, spending several nights based at Bonchester Bridge and eventually moving on to Berwick.  They may get to see to day's Tour of Britain Stage 2 between Hawick and Duns. They will be in the UK until September the 18th. It was good to meet up with Parker on Saturday and unfortunate that Janet was indisposed.

Geoff's 3 Bike Ride Wednesday 7th September

Although this is stated to start from White Moss CP you can park for free in a number of lay-bys on the side of the B5343 from the top of Dunmail Raise to Rydal. If you do stop at White Moss do take care to follow the parking instructions carefully as there have been complaints about the authority over charging! I am intending to park at NY342076 You can also park in Grasmere. Whatever we will meet at White Moss as stated on the runs list at 0930. Although quite short the route is hilly as posted; but we can both change the route if the weather is not too good and we will take it steadily! Red bank, Blea Tarn, Rhino's, then a few shorter hills back over to Coniston Water (see route) We can stop for a coffee in Seathwaite but bring lunch provisions as nothing much until Coniston or the Drunken Duck on return. It's a grand expedition so it would be good to have company! Let me know if you are coming by text or WhatsApp on 07711842885 Route

Charity Lunch Sunday

Image
Rosie and I would like to thank all those who supported our fundraising for Hospice at Home, either by attending the lunch, or donating via the Just Giving page PhilandRosie. We had a lovely ride and good company as usual. Photos below.

Saturday 3rd Sept - Pot Place meet with Parker & Janet ( 2nd UPDATE )

Approximately 15 riders responded to my earlier postings to say that they intend to meet at the Pot Place. I advised the Tea Rooms of this to day and said subject to weather conditions that we  may prefer to sit outside or if it rains as forecast then we will be accommodated indoors. We are booked in for 11's. It will be good to meet up with Parker & Janet.

Rides on Sunday 4th Sept and Lunch in aid of Hospice at Home.

Rosie and myself are riding a charity ride on Saturday to raise money for Hospice at Home. To this end on Sunday, we are leading 2 and 3 bike rides starting at Greystoke village car park, at 9.30, and looping round to our house at 15 Croft Terrace, Penrith.  There we will provide lunch, for a voluntary donation to all riders, and others who may want to join us at about 11.30 to 12.00. Gluten free and vegan options will be available. Please text Rosie on 07818241833 if you are joining either rides, or meeting us for lunch. If you can't make it, and would like to donate to this worthy cause, then go to JustGiving and search for PhilandRosie. Thanks for your support.

Saturday 3 rd September Cafe meet with Parker & Janet - UPDATE

Further to my posting regarding the meet above, I placed a reservation to day for ten riders to sit outside at the Pot Place for 11's. This is subject to weather conditions and if the weather is bad we will have to try getting accommodated in doors.

Friday 2nd September, 10.00 am, from Whinlatter

Starting from the car park at 10.00 am. A short 25 mile route round the northern Whinlatter Fells and the northern Loweswater Fells. 50% off-road mainly on forestry tracks and bridleways so bikes with wider tyres would be best.  We may stop at the Kirkstile Inn or otherwise lunch at Whinlatter with an option of mountain biking on the Whinlatter trails in the afternoon. Route here Text or WhatsApp:   07906896503

Sue Cumella's Cycle pictures and cards

2 bike ride - tomorrow's circular route from Melmerby to Appleby

We will be leaving Melmerby at 9.30 heading north and west via Gamblesby arriving in Langwathby around 10.10, then continuing via Culgaith, Temple Sowerby, Bolton and Colby Hill for brunch at Appleby Hub - if you haven't been, I recommend a visit for the food and the environment. Our return route along the fellside will depend on the mood of the group - whichever we choose we're hoping for a lovely day out. I will be on  my non-assisted road bike and haven't been out much so the pace may be modest rather than moderate. Hope to see those of you who aren't elsewhere! Alison

Saturday 3rd September Cafe meet with Parker & Janet

For members who know Parker and Janet, they will be in the Carlisle area early in September and would like to meet up with some Eden Valley Cuk friends . They are available on Saturday 3rd Sept and would like to meet for 11's at the Pot Place in Plumpton. Accordingly, I will contact the Pot Place to book our group in on Saturday 3rd September at 11:00. It would be helpful if anyone who intends to cycle or drive to the venue texts me on 07983204504 or emails me. I can then keep the Pot Place updated on the number of likely attendees.

Thanks to a query from a member I have discovered that the Inn at Bonchester Bridge will be closed on Wednesday.   Those of you planning to come on the ride will need to bring your own lunch.    Refreshments will be available at Newcastleton and Langholm.   Phone me on 07709710301 if you have any questions
Grade 2 Ride Sunday 14th Aug - Followup advice Further to my earlier posting, if the route is modified, Uldale would be the only food stop and should be viewed as 11's / early lunch. Riders wanting additional rations should bring their own provisions. It would also be wise to carry plenty of drink to keep hydrated.
Grade 2 Ride Sunday 14 th Aug Since the weather is likely to be hot, the published route around Skiddaw via Uldale, Keswick and the A66 corridor may be modified depending on how riders feel about doing the complete circuit. It is suggested that Uldale is kept as the 11's venue and that the return to Greystoke is made by keeping north east / east of Skiddaw to eliminate the long potentially hot route via Bassenthwaite to Keswick and the A66 corridor. Three return routes are possible : - 1. Ireby, Sandale, Bolton Low Houses, Westward, West Curthwaite, Raughton Head, Sowerby Row, Skelton, Blencow. 2. Retrace towards Caldbeck, Faulds Brow, Rosley, West Curthwaite,  Raughton Head, Sowerby Row, Skelton, Blencow. 3. Retrace to Hesket Newmarket, Newlands, Sour Nook,  Sowerby Row, Skelton, Blencow. Mae's Tea Room at Uldale  will be open and are aware that our group are visiting for 11's. Apologies for the late posting I have been away not had time to consider revision of the route.

Bonchester Bridge ride - Wed 17th August

The ride will start at 9.30am from the Sycamore Cafe in Longtown.   The cafe is on the Main Street and there is free parking close by.   The cafe opens very early so you can get refreshments before we set off (but get there early) The route is 78 miles.   We will travel to Newcastleton via Penton and on to Bonchester Bridge on the B6357.  After that we join the Hawick to Newcastleton road and turn off at Hermitage to the A7.   After Langholm we return to Longtown via Claygate and Canonbie.    The route is very scenic.    In my experience roads in this part of Scotland including the A7 are usually quiet. Refreshment stops will be at Newcastleton and Bonchester Bridge.  I am very open to changing the route so if anyone has concerns we can discuss the route and make changes.    The latest forecast I have seen for Wednesday is 20 degrees and dry. Photos from the TriVets 2022

Those of you who have delved into the further reaches of our website will see that there are pictures of previous TriVets events. It would be nice to do something similar for this year so if you have some pics of cyclists riding, eating or resting during the TriVets please pass them on. Ideally jpegs of about 1Mb but don't worry about details. If you click this link you should be able to drop files into the folder. Add title, owner and detail if you can. Many thanks  Geoff

Your input is needed!

Dear Fellow Cyclists, I am part of a campaign group called  SITU (Sustainable and Integrated Transport for Ullswater). The group has been working on a questionnaire about safe cycling routes and crossings along the A66 west of Stainton. The short questionnaire is now ready and available through the SITU website on the link below. Could I ask you please to complete the survey and also to send it on to keen and reluctant cyclists of your acquaintance, friends and family, or anyone else who you think might be interested. It is particularly relevant to local people but the thoughts of holiday makers here would be appreciated too. The last question is the crucial one and may appear a little ambiguous (I didn’t design it!) but the critical input you guys could put it in,  is which of  the A66 crossings between Penrith and Troutbeck you think would most benefit from cyclist improvements. Many  thanks for your help. Cecilia Questionnaire here :

3 Bike Ride (with a 2 bike option) Wednesday 6th July

Newcastleton & Kielder Lakeside Way Trail **There are a couple of diversions in force on the trail, due to storm damage earlier in the year, but it is open** 09:30 from Newcastleton, Scottish Borders, to Kielder Castle (15 miles) & then around Kielder on the Lakeside Way trail (26 miles) returning to Newcastleton by same route. 56 miles total. Free parking at Douglas Square, Newcastleton.  OR meet 11.00 hours (approx) at Kielder Castle for coffee & just do the Lakeside Way trail (26 miles). There are options to trim a few miles off the trail if required. The Lakeside Way follows the 26 mile Kielder Water shoreline. A unique, beautiful cycling experience accessing the most scenic parts of the lake shore on a multi-user, traffic free, trail for walkers, cyclists, horse riders & wheelchair users & clearly signposted all the way. The surface is finely crushed, heavily compacted, well drained gravel & is rideable on any type of bike though, in my opinion, sturdy

In particular I would particularly like to thank the volunteers who organised and served the food, laid out tables & chairs, ride registration, ride leaders, did route risk assessments etc etc..... I would also like to thank all those people who came along on the day for the ride - the event would not have happened without you. It was a pleasure meeting so many new people. A few statistics from the day Youngest rider - 50, oldest rider - 80, average age - 68. Total number of riders was 46 (100km 24, 100 miles 22).
