Are cycling helmets the best thing since "Sliced Bread" or is it marketing BS?

There was an interesting programme on Radio 4 last week about the effectiveness of cycling helmets and what to look for when purchasing. You can find it on BBC Sounds - Sliced Bread last Thursday (22nd) at 12:32 or search for podcast "Sliced Bread"
