New Year's Eve ride on Sunday

With a tally of 986.72 miles this year (pathetic, isn't it?!) cycling on New Year's Eve is really not optional - just 13.28 miles to reach 4 figures!😉🚲🚲 So, I'll be leaving Beacon Edge opposite the Cemetery around 10 for a leisurely ride via Yanwath and Tirril before climbing the hill to Celleron and continuing through Askham and Lowther with a view to arriving at Larch Cottage cafe Melkinthorpe soon after 11. A more direct return should allow time to tackle the 'must be completed before midnight' list when I get home! The forecast isn't brilliant but we've seen a lot worse recently so I hope I'm not alone. I haven't been out for over a month so the pace may be even more modest than my 'normal'. If you're a fast rider planning to come with me, please wear extra clothes! Alison 07500 564922

Christmas Eve Bike Ride from Dalston

The pace will be moderate & suitable for all levels. The weather forecast, at this time, is for light rain & gusty winds. Please let me know if you are coming along as if no one responds I will go from Carlisle & miss out Dalston. Text or WhatsApp 07855534727  Cheers 🍻 & merry Christmas, John H P.S. Christmas jumpers & headwear optional 🎅🤶

A66 west

I have had an updating email from National Highways today saying that they are carrying on their work on outstanding matters in anticipation of the Government approving the scheme. The deadline for the Government decision is the 7th of March 2024. There is a strong case for its grant; included in this is the prospect of being able to cycle local routes without having your feet / tyres touch the surface of the A66 between Penrith and Scotch Corner.  Nigel

Thirlmere West side updates

You may have seen this link through to United Utilities work on Rough Crag but for those who havn't - they seem to be making some progress... https://www.unitedutilities.com/my-local-area/parks-and-reservoirs/acres-of-nature/Thirlmere/thirlmere-west-road-and-rough-crag/

Sun 10th 3 bike ride to coffee stop at Pooley

Anyone like to join me to ride to the coffee stop at Pooley? I am leaving Beacon Edge cemetery lay-by at 9.30, passing through Greystoke at 10.15, and then to Granny Dowbekins for 11.30 ish, via Ullswater. 25 miles. Return to be decided by democratic means. Phil 07810751189.

Today's 2 bike ride cancelled

In view of the overnight freeze and the route proposed being on minor roads, Nigel is not going to lead the published ride. It may well be that the more major roads will be ice free at least later in the morning but we can't be confident of that.  Alison 07500 564922

TODAY'S 3 BIKE RIDE CANCELLED!

I am reluctantly cancelling the 3 Bike Ride from Dalston listed for today. Although there is sunshine forecast there is frost & ice here with temperatures of -2°C & only expected to rise to 3°C for the day. Which is below the threshold I like for outdoor cycling & safety. There were no 'takers' for the ride anyway (but posting this just in case anyone was thinking of turning up unannounced) so I'll probably continue my tour of Mallorca... In the garage on the turbo trainer!☹️ Cheers John H

2-bike ride to the Pot Place tomorrow

This will now be led by Nigel as I have to be at home 😔 Same plan - to leave Langwathby at 10. Final decision will be made by 9 am tomorrow, depending on overnight frost etc. so please check the blog tomorrow after 9. Alison 07500 564922

3 Bike Ride Wednesday - CHANGE OF PLAN

Start Dalston 10.00 hours for route round Solway. Mileage & stops will be weather & 'mood' dependant by discussion. Not sure if the ride will go ahead due to very low forecast temperatures & possible icy conditions especially on untreated roads & in the shaded areas. Temperature isn't expected to rise above 2 or 3 ° c max. Anyway, if the ride goes ahead (please check blog beforehand) , I've decided to start at Dalston & will ride a route around the Solway coast or in that area. Text or WhatsApp 07855534727 Cheers John H

Weather permitting 2 bike ride on Wednesday 6 December

I think it better not to lead a ride if the conditions are adverse or ice is likely. It doesn't stop others cycling on the main A roads to Pot Place at their own risk. If you wish to cycle with me, be sure to let me know so that I can tell you if the ride is cancelled. There is a limit to the number of routes to be taken from Langwathby to UpFront and the Pot Place but it's a long time since I cycled round Lazonby Fell - probably not since the Thiefside garden centre closed and that was long before covid! So the plan is to meet at Langwathby at 10, follow the road through Salkeld Dykes crossing the B road and bearing left to join the A6 briefly, passing under the M6 and turning left just before Calthwaite. These roads may be icy so I will be watching the forecast... Alison 07500 564922

Club Lunch - Saturday 13th January Roundthorn House Hotel Penrith

Thanks for all the positive comments - We seemed to enjoy the venue and certainly it was nice to see old friends. A venue we must return to? Geoff - Secretary  07711842885

2 bike ride Sunday 26 November leaving Greystoke at 10 am

My plan is to thread our way through the lanes from Greystoke touching Blencow, Skelton, Lamonby and heading north to pick up the road skirting the National Park boundary to head south again for coffee/brunch. After that, we follow the cycle track west alongside the A66 to the turning to Mungrisdale with the intention of weaving a route back which dissects but does not repeat our outward route. According to Google Maps it is about 31.4 miles.  It is likely to be cold and I will cancel if I think there is a risk of ice. Most of you know that I am not a fast rider so please make sure you bring extra layers to keep warm - don't rely on the exercise because you will not be working as hard as I will be! If interested, please let me know on 07500 564922. I'm looking forward to exploring the area west of Penrith, Alison

3 Bike Ride 09.30 Sunday 26th from Dalston

50 mile 3 bike ride starting from Dalston at 09.30 on Sunday. Going to Base Camp, Cocklakes for 'brunch' (23 mile). Route is via Southwaite, Calthwaite & Greystoke. Returning by Mungrisedale, Caldbeck & Westward. Route, map & GPX file  >> HERE << Weather forecast, as of now, is for sunny intervals with light winds, cold but no rain. One stop only so byo supplies if you think you might need more sustenance. Text or WhatsApp  07855534727 Cheers, John H

Wednesday 22 November: Morning ride to Morland

Leave Askham at 10.00 (car park by swimming pool). Route via Cockle Hill, pass near Carhullan (setting for Sarah Hall's dystopian novel - The Carhullan Army), via Bampton, Shap and Sleagill. If you're not sure where the first bit goes the route is  HERE . After Morland we could discuss an extension as the direct route back would only give 23 miles. If you'd like to join us please text or WhatsApp  07906896503.

2 bike ride to coffee at UpFront

I will be leaving Langwathby Green at 10 am to travel via Salkeld Dykes and Bowscar, skirting Plumpton and adding a loop to Hutton End. Return via Penrith/Beacon Edge. Company welcome. Alison 07500 564922

3 Bike Ride Wednesday 15th November

Ride starts from Dalston at 09:30. Coffee at Maes after about 14 niles, further refreshments either in Keswick (26 miles) or Threlkeld (31 miles). Weather forecast at the moment doesn't look too bad although there's a westerly wind which means that the coffee stop will be something to look forward to!  ROUTE HERE Please let me know if you are coming along. Bill 07921 297 045

2 bike ride Wednesday 8 th November

A direct route to Appleby hub down the Cliburn  road returning the same way. Start time is 10 am. from Frenchfields down the road behind the Cross Keys where there is roadside parking. NY532 294. Hopefully we will miss any rain 🤞.      Rosie

3 Bike ride Wednesday 8th Nov

After initial rain mainly overnight it looks like being a sunny day! So the plan is to start at 0930 from Frenchfields Penrith where there is parking on the side of the road. NY534 294 We will then go along the fellside to Merton and down to Appleby hub for coffee hopefully meeting the other group. We then go via Burrells on the KS road and turn up to Whygill head over to Orton  stopping again at the Scar cafe from there its up the scar (steepish) down to Crosby Ravensworth and back to Penrith via Little Strickland. Distance is 60mi but we have the opportunity to reduce this by mutual agreement! I hope I will have company! WhatsApp or text 07711842885 - as always bring lights just in case we have another puncture!(ref Sunday!) Route Geoff

Good showing of Eden Valley Group at Thirlmere Rally

Pictures here    below is from the Change.org update........  The spirit of community was alive today (5 November) as around 1,000 walkers, cyclists and people with disabilities gathered to protest against the proposed permanent closure of the West Thirlmere Road. Almost 10,000 people have signed a petition to keep the road open in the name of safety and public right of way. A proposal is being prepared by Cumberland Council for the Highways Committee on Friday 10 November to approve a permanent closure of the West Thirlmere Road, but has so far met with significant resistance, including 2,310 letters of objection. A Victorian pledge for future generations In 1879, the ‘Manchester Corporation Waterworks Act’ entitled the Corporation to dam the lake at Thirlmere creating a reservoir from which water would be pumped over 90 miles to Manchester.  The 1879 Act specified that a new road had to be built and maintained for public use and stated that this road – the West Thirlmer

Update 2 bike ride tomorrow 5 November

I have chosen Keswick Museum to meet because it is quite central. I don't have the knowledge to give advice on suitable places to park, most of which come at a cost. The Museum is on Station Road between Upper and Lower Fitz Park. Although there is on-street parking there, I think it is time-limited. The Museum is quite close to the Threlkeld/Keswick former railway route which I plan to take for a short distance as we leave Keswick. I am planning to leave at 9.45. I have taken advice (thanks Geoff!) and realise that I can avoid the big hill to Castle Rigg Stone Circle so I plan to amend my ride to take the road slightly further north. If you wish to meet us en route, please let me know so that we can be sure not to miss you. I'm hoping we will meet up with the 3 bike riders around Legburthwaite and travel with them south along the west Thirlmere road. Club strips will help to identify us as a group. Don't forget to bring clothes to keep warm in case we are hanging around an

3 bike ride Sunday 0945 to Thirlmere rally plus around Skiddaw

Image
image - Mark Hatton As you will have heard and will see below in Alison's post - despite United Utility's apparent U turn on keeping the Thirlmere Road closed there is to be a quiet rally to the N end of the closure from Arboth CP (for walkers) and from Legburnthwaite CP for cyclists.  I propose starting at Greystoke and joining the rally then proceeding on around Skiddaw - ROUTE - bring food but we should be able to stop at Maes or Caldbeck Muddy Duck kiosk. I will check. It being after the clocks have gone back bring lights just in case! NOTE start time 0945 Let me know if you intend to join us Text or WhatsApp 07711842885

Sunday 5 November 2 bike ride to Thirlmere

As you may know, the quiet road to the west of Thirlmere, which is of particular importance to cyclists seeking to avoid the busy A591, has been closed by United Utitlies for 2 years following Storm Arwen  on 'safety grounds' and has been the subject of an application for permanent closure. The 'Keep Thirlmere Open' campaign has sprung up which we have supported locally and our national body, Cycling UK, has also signalled its opposition to the road closure. There is a proposal for a Gathering on Sunday, including walkers and cyclists, to 'contemplate' the lake and the proposals to limit access to it. Cyclists are being asked to meet at the Legburthwaite Car Park, leaving there at 10.45 to ride across the Dam, down past Armboth to gather at the fences near Rough Crag where there will  be a rally from 11.30 am. This is to be a peaceful, responsible and legal rally - no damage, no trespassing and no litter. As there is likely to be pressure on local parking, I am

Have you got any good Photos!

We are putting together fliers to help make others aware of our club/group. Probably not required until the spring ( that time being the best for recruitment!) but I would be pleased to receive striking pictures of views, or cyclists in action around the area. There won't be thousands in photography equipment as prizes but far more important, you'll have your picture on our fliers! So that you have an idea of what we intend click here . The fliers will also be used to publicise events and may have a space for overprinting but could have one or more photos and be in A5 and possibly A6 format. Send to me via email or 'drop box' link in original size bearing in mind permissions may need to be granted/requested thanks in advance Geoff

Wednesday's Ride Cancelled

Apologies but I am unable to lead the ride, published on the runs list, from Dalston on Wednesday 1st November. Unfortunately I'm 'under the weather' & it doesn't feel like I'll be fit enough by then. Hopefully someone else will put a ride on. You will probably want to use your own route but the route I planned on riding can be seen  HERE  . Sorry. Hope to see you soon. John H

Rides this Sunday 29th

Rosie and myself will be leading 2 separate rides, meeting at the Cafe stop in Howtown. Both rides leave from Beacon Edge cemetery lay-by at 9.30. (NB clocks go back on Sunday 2am). Rosie is going via Greystoke Ghyll and the flattish route to Ullswater and Howtown (2 bike ride). I am going to Greystoke and the hilly route to Ullswater. (3 bike ride) Return to Penrith dependant on the weather and mood. Hope to see plenty of folks out.

Closure of 'quiet' Road Grasmere to Keswick past the lake 5th November Meeting

‘Keep Thirlmere Open’ (See Facebook) has set up a Meeting for Cyclists and Walkers for SUNDAY THE 5 th NOVEMBER at 10.45 on the back road round Thirlmere. For fuller detail see the post of Mark Hatton on the above group dated the 18 th October for   this ‘.... opportunity for quiet contemplation of the Permanent Closure Decision date .....’.   If you need to get there by car Paul Ross posted (Facebook) suggestions for parking on the 26 th October. Otherwise you could join us cycling. Alison is putting on a ride to there (watch for the Runs List and another Blog here). In short United Utilities seek a Permanent Closure of the road around the far side of the lake on the basis of (United Utilities allege) danger to the public (leaving cyclists with a section of the main A591 which is twisty, undulating, narrow and fast, for motorised vehicles, between Grasmere and Keswick). Cumberland Council Highways is to consider this Application on the 10 th November . Please support this

Closure of Caldew cycleway

Talkin Tarn tearooms tomorrow

They will provide hot pasties, bacon rolls, cold sandwiches, a variety of cakes and hot drinks in takeaway cups with some seating downstairs as well as outside. Please take lots of photos as we have been asked to provide some for Fellfoot Forward when they launch the cycle route. Club strip in those photos would be a bonus! Looking forward to getting out now that Babet has passed through. Alison 07500 564922

Sunday 22 October 3-bike ride to Talkin Tarn

Supplementary to Alison's 2 bike ride (blog below) I am leading a 3 bike ride also to Talkin Tarn & hoping to meet up with Alison's group there for lunch. 56 mile ride starting at 09.30 from The Green, Wetheral. Heading to Warwick Bridge, Laversdale, Hethersgill & Walton for tea/coffee stop (15 mile). Then Lanercost, Hallbankgate (near), Forest Head to Talkin Tarn for lunch (33 mile). Part way along the fell side onto Armathwaite & return to Wetheral. Sunday 22 October 2-bike ride to Talkin Tarn

My ride is designed for the Fellfoot Partnership who are promoting the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and have approached club members to design a route which showcases our lovely lanes. I have linked it with their (not yet published) 'Slow Trail' walks which are also part of the Fellfoot initiative. At 41 miles it is the upper end of my capacity so I may be slow; if you're a faster rider who is joining me, make sure you have enough clothes!  Route Here If you wish to shorten the ride by 11.5 miles you can meet me at the junction near Renwick which I estimate we will reach at around 10 am but please let me know if you're doing this so that I don't miss you. I am aiming to reach Talkin Tarn soon after 12 and will phone in the next few days and blog to say what refreshments can be purchased. Bring something with you for a roadside stop on the way north.  As always, please let your leader know if you intend to come. My mobile phone isn't used as such  (e

Bikes on Scottish trains

I’ve just seen a comment on the Cycle Touring Festival Facebook page that trains on the Glasgow to Oban line are going to trial carriages that will taken 24 bikes including tandems.   If the trial is a success it may be extended throughout Scotland.   When checking further I learnt that the Fort William to Mallaig line currently takes 20 bikes on selected trains.  Maybe not in the winter months, At the EGM on Saturday I mentioned that Scotrail trains from Carlisle to Glasgow will take up to 12 bikes.      I use the service from time to time taking my bike to Dumfries or further north, usually Sanquar or Kirkconnel and riding from there.   I recommend trying the service out.   Brings a new dimension to bike riding.
I am riding from Beacon Edge via Greystoke to the coffee stop at Pooley Bridge.  The weather is looking ok but maybe a bit chilly. I m intending to be back in Penrith by lunch time so if anyone wants to join me that’s great. I m happy to have people join me as far as Pooley Bridge and then do their own longer ride . Rosie

3 bike ride Wednesday 18th

I am proposing to ride from Melmerby over Hartside  to Alston and Halbankgate (stop) then Forrest Head Talkin and back along the Fellside a total of about 50mi - The weather isn't looking too bad and I would be glad of company? Stats: 72.5km 750m ascent but who believes that? Route here Let me know if you are coming/meeting along the way - text or WhatsApp 07711842885

About 25 miles. Company would be welcome. Let me know if you intend to come. Phil B 07810751189

Reliability Ride - Cheers 🍻

I didn't get to say thanks to all the organisers, committee members, helpers & especially the crumble & custard makers 😋😁 for today (I could only manage 3 portions - ok, 4 as one was a double portion 🤪).  So thank you all for a really well organised event. I (& I'm sure all that took part) appreciate your efforts, hard work & devotion to the club 👏👏. Anyway, that's enough of that as I don't want a reputation as a soppy so & so 😁. Cheers all 🍻

e Mtb/Mtb survey

An interesting request sent to the club Hi I got your details from the CyclingUK club page as I am a member and active cyclist. I am carrying out PhD research at the University of Highlands and Islands into mtb/emtb recreation conflict perceptions and wondered if you could share the link for this 5 min survey to get insight into members views around the increase of e mountain biking and its impact or perceived impact. The link below connects to the survey and it's a quick click through process. Thanks in advance for sharing the link and anyone who completes the survey. There are two routes – 60km and 100km You will be given a GPX route for your Garmin and/or route card if you prefer.  So that we all get back at about the same time and can share the crack and enjoy 'crumble and custard' together the 100km group will start at 0830 and the 60km ride will set off at 1000 Further details and entry forms are on the website here Oh!  cost  a mere £10  Do let anyone you think might be interested know about this event.

Mike Hutchinson's funeral ceremony

Mike's funeral service will be held at : - Beetham Hall Crematorium ( post code LA7 7AP ) on Wednesday 4th October at 14:00. The site is south of Milnthorpe off the A6 road from Kendal. It can also be reached from the M6 Jcn 36 ( with the A65 ) then proceeding a short distance towards Kirkby Lonsdale on the A65, then left at a roundabout to Crooklands, then turning left onto the B6385 to Milnthorpe. There will be a gathering with refreshments nearby just  over the road from the crematorium. All who knew Mike are welcome to attend, dress will be  informal and cyclists are welcome to wear club colours. Family flowers only please. Donations should be made to the Ukrainian Appeal. Our thoughts are with Anne, Neil, Tom, Ian and family at this distressing time.

Upfront cafe to be closed on Sundays

From 1st October, Upfront Gallery will be open Wednesdays to Saturdays only.   Their Winter Opening days.

Sunday 24 September short 2 bike ride to coffee leaving at 9.15 am

I am leaving Beacon Edge at 9.15 because, although it's only 14 miles to coffee, Google says it will take me 1 and 3/4 hours on the route I'm planning. Mr Google obviously knows how slow I am. We will be going via Eamont Bridge to Yanwath, Tirril and up a road I don't think I have ever been up (I may discover there's a good reason for that) to Celleron, then to Lowther, Clifton Dykes and Brougham Hall for 11s. Direct route back to Beacon Edge because I'm going out in the afternoon. Anyone/everyone welcome Alison  07500 564922

Obituary : Mike Hutchinson

Sadly, I have to report that Mike Hutchinson ( Secretary of Lancaster Cuk ) for many years died on Monday 11th September.  In north London in his youth he rode with the Edgware CTC group and raced with the associated Westerley Road Club.  For many years he was a strong fell runner and in later life concentrated on cycling with Lancaster CTC, participating in and organising Audax events, riding tours in Europe and attending CTC Birthday Rides. EV members who knew him will have met him on Lancaster Cuk club runs or participating in Audax events organised by him. I first met Mike at the CTC Birthday Rides at Malton in Yorkshire on an Audax event over the North York Moors. It was there I learnt of his nickname " Hedgehog " after he rode over a road kill hedgehog in his youth when he had a crew cut. I also learnt of his history with the Edgware CTC ( my riding group at this time ). For many years I enjoyed riding Audax events in Lancashire and the Pennines organised by him plus a

Sunday 10 September - 2 bike ride

This ride is being designed around a fund-raising Big Breakfast at Langwathby Village Hall (bring cash) and the passing by of The Flying Scotsman at Langwathby station (it may or may not stop for water). I will be leaving Beacon Edge by the Penrith Cemetery to cycle to Lazonby, crossing the river and up to Glassonby and down the hill through Little Salkeld which should see us arrive for our breakfast about 11 (when it will probably be at its busiest!) It seems the Flying Scotsman is to pass through Langwathby at 13.30 so, provided there is time for us to cycle and still find standing room on the station platform, I will aim to do a short loop to Skirwith and Hunsonby but this will depend on the mood of the party. Once the Flying Scotsman has passed, I will be taking the normal Sustrans route over Strawberry Hill back to Penrith. Company welcome, Alison 07500 564922

Wednesday 6th ride from Lanthwaite Green 10am start

I have decided to change the start time of my ride from Lanthwaite Green to 10 am.  This will allow me to drop Phil off in Keswick for the ride with David Thomas. If you are intending to join me on this ride to Ennerdale Bridge then could you please let me know by text or What’s App on 07818241833. I can then let The Gather at Ennerdale Bridge know how many to expect. The weather is looking good so it should be a nice ride. I am intending to just stop once so bring any snacks you may need. If you are not sure where the parking is please what’s app me and I will send a map photo . Rosie

Stagstones Road (Strawberry Hill) Planning Application

On behalf of the Club I made written representations at the end of July 2021 . Today I have had Notice that a, reduced scale application (identifying that it is a reduced scale one with intent to follow up with more) is to be considered next Wednesday in Penrith, the Agenda starting at 1000 hours. I have given Notice to the Council that I would like to attend the Meeting (on the Club's behalf) to make further representations. I would be delighted if people would come to (silently) support me - Club vests welcome.

Home brew for cleaning bikes

Image
I have been considering methods of cleaning the chain & cassettes on my bikes that don’t involve expensive proprietary degreasers.    At my wife’s suggestion I used a mix of 1 tbsp of vinegar, 1 tbsp of washing up liquid and 3/4 pint of water, a concoction she uses to clean the inside of windows   The attached  photo is the result.    The ‘clean’ isn’t perfect but it is a massive improvement on proprietary degreasers I have used.   I intend to experiment further and may report back.

Reliability Rides on 30th September

These will be open to all comers but we hope there will be a good showing from members.

Melmerby to The Sill Tuesday 22nd August

I propose to set off from Melmerby on Tuesday morning at 1100. We should arrive at Lanercost about 1300. We can then go to The Sill via the Military Road from Greenhead; we could  divert to go via Haltwistle and Barden Mill (where there is a small cafe) involving some engaging climbing (we might want to save to this for another day though). Look forward to seeing people.

If you're not bothered by the Football

Not a fast pace. We may cycle back on Friday retracing our steps, or, come back the other side of Hartside (similar mileage). If joining and participants want luggage transporting please ring and we can agree logistics for this (Alison will be driving there). If you intend coming with me, please would you let me know in advance; I am open to suggestions as to food (vegi 'Roots') and Route. Nigel 07867 840534 (landline 01768 881066)

The Sill - Tuesday 22nd to Friday 25 August

Next week a group of us will be staying at The Sill, a brand new Youth Hostel in Northumberland, to explore a new area by bike. Our planned rides will be appearing on the runs list over the next few days and on the blog after the weekend. There is still a private en suite room for 2 people available if anyone is interested at short notice. There are also campsites nearby.  If you don't want to stay overnight, you may wish to explore somewhere new on a day-trip, or to join us for a meal at the pub on Thursday 24th August. I will be doing some very low key exploring, taking in visits to the sites on the Roman wall but Mike, Geoff and others will no doubt be doing something more ambitious. Additionally, there may be people riding to The Sill on Tuesday and returning Friday. If you want a chat about the plan, please feel free to contact me by email or phone - 01768 881066/07500 564922.  HELP - Campag Rear Mech Problem The hanger bolt (see pic)  for the rear derailleur on my Bob Jackson sheared off yesterday when nearly back from 11's at Morland! No idea why, but been somewhat clunky gear shifts recently. Bent the hnager bracket (part of the frame, not separate like today's bikes), but have straightened with a big adjustable spanner as leverage. It's an old Campag Racing T / Racing Triple 9 speed mech (seems there were 5 variants) and spares are hard to find. Slim chance, but if anyone has an old or broken Campag 9 or 10 speed rear mech languishing in a box, I may be able to raid it for spares. Or suggestions where I could find one. OK, could change the whole setup for Shimano and far better gear shifts, but that's how the bike came to me from Keith Jowett many years ago and be nice to keep it as was.

A591 Thirlmere

I have signed in support of re-opening the road to the West of the lake with comment as follows: 'As Campaigns Officer for Eden Valley Group of Cycling UK I endorse this petition. We have often used this road to link rides from the Keswick area through to Grasmere and beyond. It represents a very good option to avoid the A591 where it is narrow, twisty and undulating – all features of which make for limited sight lines for motorised drivers. Using the off road route up to close to the top of Dunmail Raise affords cyclists access back onto the A591 where it has opened out into a generously wide road.'

Railway Ticket Office Closures (and a bit more)

I have emailed Avanti and Northern (copying our MP) in the following terms: 'EDEN VALLEY CYCLING UK REPRESENTATIONS ON THREATENED CLSOURE OF RAILWAY TICKET OFFICES – PENRITH AND APPLEBY   JULY 23 I am the Campaigns Officer of Eden Valley Cycling UK Group. A              Background: 1.             The prospect of closing Ticket Offices at any railway station threatens the use of rail service and good relationships between cyclists and the railways. 2.             There are many things that might be done to encourage cyclists back into regular use of the railways; in particular the reinstatement of ‘Guards Vans’ where extensive space for transporting larger items as well as cycles of all descriptions   used to be provided. As recently as 2018 we were able to take our cycles in such a carriage from Newcastle to London for the Prudential Ride London. I understand the carriage was regarded as ‘old’ and accordingly was to be withdrawn from service. 3.             As a club

Melmerby

With no ride on the Runs List, I'm going to cycle up to Melmerby from home in Raughton Head leaving 9:30ish for coffee. If anyone would care to join me for the ride they would be most welcome. > Route < will be via Calthwaite, Plumpton, Lazonby, Glassonby etc. Let me know either by text or WhatsApp so I don't leave without you. Cheers, Bill 07921 297 045

Today's 2 bike ride

I'm going to rename it 'The Committee Ride' as we were only missing Mike B and CJ! A first ascent of Hartside for Eileen (and possibly Tony S), a new cafe to some and a reminder to some of the rest of us that we can do Hartside - it isn't too hard! Thanks to everyone for their cheerful company despite conditions. No-one managed the challenge of climbing to the top more slowly than me, but that wasn't really what the day was about. And it was good to meet 4 x 3 x bike riders at the cafe. Great turnout!

2 Bike Ride Wednesday 12th July

This is a bit of a challenge ride - can anyone get up Hartside more slowly than I can? It's several years since I tried but I've visited the Nook Farm cafe and I know it's worth the climb. We are starting inside the Village Bakery at 9 am for coffee and breakfast rolls for anyone needing a bit of extra fortification before visiting the Roman fortifications.  At 9.30 we depart outside the Bakery and will head along the fellside through Gamblesby and Renwick, eta at the turning up the hill just before Renwick around 10 am. I know the Renwick route is a steep one - it was chosen for the Sustrans C2C route so it's bound to be - but the advantage is that it keeps you away from the A686 for longer and there are fewer people to see me get off my bike and push. And once you actually join the A686 you have broken the back of the hill... it's just the bit in between. According to Google it's just under 16 miles to the cafe but they will be slow ones.  Don't forget tha

3 Bike Ride Wednesday 12th July

60 mile ride starting at 09.30 hours from Wetheral. Another trip over Hartside Summit, from Alston side. Hoping to meet up with Alison's 2 bike group beforehand at the Nook farm shop & cafe for refreshments (22 mile). After Hartside it's via Renwick, Lazonby & Plumpton (stop at the Pot Place if required @ 43 mile). The last leg is Calthwaite, Armathwaite & back to Wetheral. Route/map/gpx file  >> HERE << Weather forecast is a bit mixed but nowt to worry us hardy northerners 😁 but if the weather was making us a bit miserable we could shorten the route after Hartside. Flexibility is the aim. Text or WhatsApp John H 07855534727 Cheers 👍

Ride to Acorn Bank Sunday 9th

Nothing on the 'runs list' for tomorrow so I'm taking a nice & easy 46 mile ride, starting at Armathwaite at 09.30 tomorrow, to the EV coffee stop at Acorn Bank NT property (22 mile).  Route/map/gpx file  >> HERE  << Weather forecast looks good & should be a good ride out on a familiar route. If anyone wants to join me that would be great. All welcome. Text or WhatsApp 07855534727  Cheers John H

The Sill YHA holiday Tuesday 22 to Friday 25 August - update

For details of the holiday, please see the blog of 9 May. The idea is that anyone wanting to come books themselves in but lets me know if they want to join the meal out on the Thursday night. I've just rung the YHA to find out what accommodation is still available; there are no rooms left for 2 people. There are 5 beds available in the single gender dorms, one private room for 4 without an en suite, 4 x 4 bedded rooms with an en suite and 1 x 4 bedded room with en suite which includes a double bed. We will have fun however many there are, but the more the merrier! Alison
