Tomorrow Sunday 1 August 2 bike ride from Melmerby to Larch Cottage and beyond

Sorry this is such a late post... I will be leaving Melmerby at 9.30 tomorrow morning (the cafe is  open from 9 if you want a coffee before the start) and taking a direct-ish 14 mile route to Larch Cottage at Melkinthorpe for 11s. From there, I will take a fairly circuitous route including Penrith and Langwathby to return home to Melmerby. Estimated total distance 30 - 35 miles. I can't think of a suitable lunch stop so you can either stock up at Larch Cottage (eating bacon sandwiches usually works for Nigel), bring your own to eat en route or (my favourite) plan a stop at Langwathby shop for an ice cream to get you home - or you can do all three! Despite the late publication of this post, I hope I won't be on my own tomorrow.. Alison

Campaigns (2nd of 22nd July) Penrith Cycling and Walking Plan

Please have a look at my blog earlier today on the issue of traffic on the C2C Strawberry Hill Penrith, if you have not already done so. Penrith Cycle and Walking Plan : ( Google Search: ' Cycling and Walking in Cumbria'; Environment and Planning; (Cumbria CC website with introduction showing other towns in Cumbria where consultation is well advanced and Penrith ‘Have your say on cycling and walking networks’ – proceed with this link.' The consultation closes on the 6th August - not much time. It is part, hopefully, of setting up proper provision for cyclists in and around the Penrith area (as for the other parts of the County); the Government is providing funding for significant infrastructure - but it has to be clearly thought through. There is a questionnaire to complete. Please, please do have a go. What has been thought of does not come over strongly to suggest a need for cycling provision - getting around town and to / from it linking with surrounding villages.   I am

Campaigns

We seem to be in a time of activity on roads and routes in our area. C2C route: there is a proposal to set up an intensive sheep farm on the route between Penrith and Langwathby - 'Strawberry Hill'. The planning application describes intention to erect a large building for  'husbandry of hundreds' of sheep; the application acknowledges that the road has dangers yet the application describes an intended highly mechanised operation i.e. large vehicles being used; it requires a 6 metre width of access track. Detail can be seen on Eden District Council website - planning section reference:    21/0441 Site address  LAND OFF STAGSTONES ROAD LOW COTE GHYLL EDENHALL PENRITH . No closing date for representations appears on the EDC Website for this but the application was made in May 2021. If we are to make representations we need to do this very soon. Please would you contact me if you have any thoughts for me. I will be Blogging other issues over the next few days

Sunday 18 July 2 bike ride

I will be leaving Melmerby Village Bakery after coffee around 11.30 on Sunday. The plan is to travel along the fellside via Dufton, Keisley and Murton, skirting round Appleby and returning via Long Marton with a late lunch stop at Cafe Velo in Temple Sowerby. When I did this route without the detour to Temple Sowerby it was just under 34 miles with 1357 feet of climbing. As with all club rides, the pace will be that of the slowest rider (probably me going uphill); it will be steady/moderate.  Please text me on 07500 564922 if you are hoping to come. I don't use my mobile phone for conversations because of poor fellside reception; if you want a chat, please send your number and I will phone you back. Alison
